The other day i was surfing the net for ways to improve my memory and one website claimed that learning to write with both hands boosts your brain's activity and enhances your memory. So do you think it works? My handwriting is terrible when i am using my stronger hand as it is so if i try and improve it do you think it will improve my brain's function? I mean it is a fine motor skill!!

I have also read about it that if we write with our weeker hand, it will help us improve our memory skills. I tried doing it and it was great fun. I have mentioned your idea in one of my posts. You also shared your views in that post. Here is the link: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2486320.aspx?p=1#2_22126930

Anything which is demanding and challenging raises our skills and potential. PS - thanks for the add.

Yes I do believe learning to write with both hands would increase your brain function. So would learning something new on a constant basis, being involved (either playing or listening to music), reading and even going for walks. Our brain needs constant stimulation, research has shown that keeping our minds active and involved actually helps us to think faster. It's why our brains get so fuzzy after sitting and watching a movie for 3 or 4 hours straight, we literally put the majority of our brain in sleep mode. Learning to write with your other hand uses all sorts of areas of your brain and any boost to brain activity, the increase in production means your brain is actually active enough that things don't disappear into your mental memory bank and just get lost.

I have this notion that if i learn to write with my non dominant hand then i won't be able to write properly with my dominant one! I remember hearing something like this as a child and it has stuck and it worries me because as i said earlier my writing isn't good and i don't want to go into a completely illegible category!

*shakes her head* I have known several people who have taught themselves to write with their non-dominant hand, it has in no way effected their ability to write with their dominant hand, penmanship has remained the same for the dominant hand as well. While I appreciate your concerns I can assure you they are not necessary in this instance. While learning to write properly with your non-dominate hand will take time, and is to be honest a bit frustrating, it will in no way have any negative effect on the handwriting from your dominant hand.

well that's cleared and yeah it is i tried it sometime ago but then someone told me writing would deteriorate so i stopped! I am gonna take it up again for sure! I am really into learning new things like recently i have taken up origami and i am really into learning different languages etc. i like to keep busy and lately i have doing a lot of mylotting so i hope my brain stays functional! Its really scary what happens when a person's cognitive functions decline with age!!

I think it is possible to have some effects if you use both hands in writing since there are millions of nerves connecting the hands and the brain. Using both hands in writing might do something good to the brain functions.

Well I do not know about that. Then again, while I can write with both hands, its not advised that I should be writing with both hands. My hand writing is not the best to say the very least. Still I do think that might make sense. If nothing else, even if it does not improve memory, it would give you options, if the hand you were using was rendered unusable for whatever reason.

Exactly my concern!! My handwriting is barely legible as it is and to attempt writing with the non-dominant does give me hiccups but i still am going to try it. Your right that it can give you an option as you never really know what life has in store for you and you should always be prepared!

Hi mystic, This is my first post at mylot. Writing with the non-dominant hand can create new connections in the brain. I wanna one day write with both my hands on two sides of a book. That would look cool. I have tried joint handwriting left hand. Wont look at it the next day!
