One will probably not be able to answer why the heart gets attracted to others as it is much more powerful then the brain at times. She was a women prior to being a Princess and one with a heart that had some missing elements.

My personal feelings is that no amount of money, riches and fame will replace a lonely heart. She was so caught up with being this held on a pedestal as a very important woman, that the people around her, like her husband forgot she was a woman with needs.
Although I would never condone a woman going outside of her marriage for comfort, she was lacking something within in her that this man, somehow provided for her. Unfortunately her life was short lived and we will truly never know what was wrong within her and why she was attracted to him.
One thing for sure though her husband was off and on with the other woman, who he later married, which apparently shows that he, the husband was not truly there for her.

I would think he probably made her feel special, loved, etc...the heart knows what it knows and there is truth in that.
