Age appropriate gifts

This year for christmas we bought a pellet/bb gun as a family gift so that my 8 year old can start to learn gun safety and target shooting. My exhusband does not think this is appropriate at any age. Also note that we live in a very hunting popular area and the kids start carrying rifles at the age of twelve. Any thoughts???

My husband is also a hunter and I just asked his opinion on this and he seems to think this is fine aslong as their is a parent around teaching him. Me as his mother think that eight is just a little to young.
