Just When You Thought You'd Been Wrong About The Courts Having Gone NUTS...

...you read this: http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2011/01/17/2011-01-17_cat_is_summoned_for_jury_duty_in_boston_court_rejects_owners_appeal_to_disqualif.html Yes, it is funny, but it does ideally illustrate how bureaucracy petrifies & deadens common sense & reality. What I'd like to know is, will the owners now be called up on some sort of legal charge for "lying" on the Census? Nice-looking cat, though, whatever! And I'd frame that stupid summons! I looked at the spoof article, and it looks different enough it appears to be unrelated - though this wouldn't be the first time an internet joke has been reported as a real news story. I'd be worried the owner would get in trouble for bringing a cat into the courthouse. He said they were going to take the cat - most courthouses have guards carefully checking what you bring in. But then that would lead to the possibly equally amusing cat getting an arrest warrant.

ALASKANRAY: Good to know I'm not the only one! By the way, go see this link. http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1945949 I really believe the story is true. Maggiepie "Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid." ~ John Wayne

I went back to review the Spoof page, but it appears to be down for the nonce. I really don't get why people do spoofs (except on April Fool's Day). I also am puzzled why people create viruses & the like. If such folks would be able to see the fruits of their labors, it would make sense, but mostly they don't, so...what satisfaction do they derive from their dirty work? Where is their motive? You're right, "Cat Busted For Jury & Census Fraud" would make a funny heading & article! Maggiepie "Politicians & diapers have one thing in common. I am in total agreement with you on that, Maggie...especially with the computer viruses being so destructive. I have never fathomed destructiveness and never will.

Yeah, it's still funny, but too annoyingly close to reality to be a real belly laugh. There are far too many loony courts out there to make this story incredible! Hiya maggiepie, Beautiful Cat a case of mistaken identity? Imagine if the Cat really did have to go to Court and be on the Jury. He would be distracting everyone for sure with such poise and confidence and such charm. This has made me smile today maggie. I don´t know if the couple will end up with Charges anyone can make a mistake but I suppose its trying to convince the Courts of that. I don´t think that they even thought about it on those terms when and how he was put on the Census. Also I did´nt know that you had to put Animals (Pets) on a Census. Is it like that over there do you have to really put your Pets on there or what. I ask that because some of the silly things that Official Places dream up so it could well be true. I was just under two weeks away of giving birth to my first son and they said I had to go and be on a Jury which was quite a few miles away from where I was staying. They said well go on the Bus then. I was really upset and the Doctor had to write a really long report to try and get me off this Duty thing. I would have gone any other time but not right then on the point of giving Birth. So in the end because they were still being stubborn about it I ended up in Hospital luck had it because he had turned around the other way probably because he did not fancy going to be on the Jury either. That was the only way I got out of that Jury Service they were hell bent on me having to go there. Love the Story about the Cat though amazing. Take care now. xxx

I've been called 4 times for jury duty, but never chosen--much to my disappointment. Maybe I should enlist my cat, Miss Minnie? Maggiepie "Politicians & diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly & for the same reason." ~ Source unknown

This is a good example of the dedication that civil servants show in their work. How can a cat be registered as a resident of a household? Could this mean that there are not as many people in America as we're made to believe and that perhaps some of them that are considered citizens of the US are in fact non-human? This is totally ridiculous and it's a funny story too. Imagine a cat on a jury. Ha ha!

Well, thanks, but now someone believes this is just a spoof. The problem is, it's so believable because courts actually have done this for real! Spoofs can only be effective when they're based on real credible events. Something to consider... Maggiepie "Politicians & diapers have one thing in common. That was hysterical. My favourite part is when the vet specified that Sal is "a domestic short-haired neutered feline." And since the owners actually listed the cat under pets on the Census, it's the Census Bureau who should be blamed. Though with this, Americans can say "We take our duty so seriously, even our cats serve on juries." Hehe, I should register all of my farm cats.

I used to do a comic strip called "Welcome To the Zoo," based on myself & my ex-roomie (Elicbxn, here in ML), about our multi-cat household, & in it I had one of the characters asking the other (as she was at the kitchen table doing her taxes), "Could we count our 5 cats as dependents? After all, they do depend on us, & I'm sure we spend at least 2 to 300 dollars a year on food & the vets!" From another room, where the other roomie was playing with a cat or two, the answer came: "Depends. How do the numbers 10 to 20 sound to you?" Each girl obviously knew the other was teasing, & knew one another's sense of humor. ;o If the animal rights fanatics win & chimps are declared a subhuman species with the rights to vote & be represented in court, maybe someday we won't be sent to The Pen for 10 to 20! Life is getting sooo strange, these days...including in the Census Bureau & that court! I've never had a pet summoned, but my soon-to-be-ex is not a US citizen, and he still gets summons every year. These government agencies don't talk to one another, do they?
