Scenario: You just aced an interview for your dream job. Your resumé and references are impeccable. You were an exemplary student and graduated with honors. You have a stellar work and community history. And your prospective employer genuinely liked you. You just know the job is yours! NOT. A couple of days later, you get a curt phone call or e-mail saying you do not fit in with the company's goals or image at this time. So what happened? It's a known fact that some employers do Google job candidates and what they find can sometimes be the deal breaker. Even if you have your privacy settings set on your Facebook (or My Space or whatever) and never publish compromising photos of yourself on the internet, one of your 'friends' who doesn't care about his privacy, does have pictures of you getting drunk and smoking pot at a fraternity party in college complete with YOUR name for all to Google and see. So...do you Google yourself to make sure there isn't something out there you don't want the whole worldwide web to see?
