Hi Friends, I am talking about on of my friends who was at my home just to wish me good luck for the new job. During our discussion he shared some office related issues with me. He told me that his colleague and friend had just become his manager, and had been behaving strangely. In meetings, his new manager would contradict his ideas, or try to find flaws in his suggestions. Earlier, they were close buddies in mutual appreciation, and frequently built on each other’s ideas. When I asked my friend that if he spoke to his manager about his behavior, my friend told me that the young manager was surprised and said that “Am I not expected to behave this way”. I believe that "it’s perfectly fine for a manager to accept good suggestions from others" What do you say? Have you ever faced situation like this?

Oftentimes, friendship is tested when one gets a promotion in an office where they both work. Some would have it get into their head and would think they are better than their former friend, so they don't want any suggestion. they feel threatened by anyone who they think could give bright new ideas to management and i think sometimes that a natural occurrence in an office. But again, we should give due respect to our manager even if he is our friend. But a good manager listens to what his subordinates may suggest. Not necessarily that he will readily agree to it, but analyze its pros and cons. Have a nice day!

My point is similar that manager should listen to his reportees and later on he/she can decide which suggestion is good or bad. Thank you for sharing.

For me yes because even if you are manager you need more to consent to your accompanied so that they feel good to work for them.

i think you are very much true. that it is really good to listen other and let other work. it is the best quality of the a good manager. I don't know i also do the same. And my manager do the same with me. He always pass on every thing on me, and just wait for my answer. It is really good point to discuss upon.

Hmm.. If it is a good suggestion, then it would be wise to "not" fight it. A healthy business atmosphere is a place where ideas are tested in a hope to achieve successful results. If Plan A doesnt work, let's try Plan B and so on and so forth until procedures have been proven effective. The problem with expressing ideas sometimes is that one may not have the gift of gab to justify that his suggestion could work. This would make someone challenge the idea and would not even give it a fair try. And yes, i would agree with you that it is perfectly fine for a manager to accept good suggestions from others. It is the same way as saying if the manager would ask his staff, "what do you think?" I could not say outrightly that a manager who contradicts an idea is a bad listener. Perhaps, he has other considerations in mind. So, what do you think?

My point is that manager can always decide as to which is a better idea or solution for a particular problem and he has all teh right to do so but but not listening a suggestion is not good. It gives a feeling that whatever manager things is always right, may be some one got a better idea which is very effective, so what is the harm if manager can just listen the suggestion and than decide further. Thank you for sharing.

Hi! Ideally, a manager delegates tasks to his subordinates which means he trusts his people to do their job well. Those below him are nearer and closer to the clientele (assuming) and therefore know the problem which they are supposed to report to authorities. Being closer to the problem, they might have some ideas to its cause and effects and have some ideas on how to resolve it. It would do well for the manager who is in a position to see the overall scenario to listen to his subordinates and consider all factors. On the other hand, the contradictions and fault-finding your friend sees in his friend-turn-manager could be just playing devil's advocate to check the loopholes in the suggestions. Perhaps, your friend should also look into his suggestions and reflect on why the friend-turn-manager seem to contradict him. There could be valid reasons. Just a thought. Personally, I listen to suggestions and discuss the merits and demerits of the suggestion.

A manager should not be just a task manager who has to assign task to his team members, he has to be a good human being and an open person to listen to his team members. Happy that you listen to your team members and take those for consideration Thank You for sharing.

A good leader must also be a good follower. He must also know how to listen and accept criticisms. If he does not possess those qualities, he should not be on that position in the first place.

Yeah, I think its perfectly fine if he accept suggestions from a subordinates especially from a friend as you have said they are.Maybe being newly promoted manager, the friend of your friend wants to prove to his superiors that they were right in promoting him so he wants to act on his own or that he can really do all the responsibilities that goes with being a manager. For me, managers need the support/suggestions if needed of his subordinates, but as a leader he must set a line or limit with regards to his friendships with his/her subordinates.

Yeh, it may be the reason that newly appointed manager wanted to prove his designation and wanted only his ideas to be implemented but that shows lack of experience for a manager. Thank you for sharing.

Congratulation for getting the new job Ajay beta. It happens because of the 'hidden-ego' in some persons. When i got my first promotion as Reader, several years ago, it was late by a month due to some flaw in paper by college office. A class mate of mine started behaving as if she was my boss!!!! A good administraor , a good manager hears opinions of all, but applies his own This i have seen and implementated in 45 years of teachng in colleges and universities. Thank you so much for this discussion.. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Thank you for all your kind wishes Sir, Manager should be open to ideas and later on after listening to all the suggestion all can brainstorm and come to conclusion instead of just stick to the suggestion that has come in his/her mind. I will be joining my new job in first week of feb and as I have got your blessings, things would be easier for me. Thank You for sharing.

hy, I believe that a future business relies on communication, a well trained team ..so that ideas thrive best company work; each man is leading in his better way..but that does not mean that the company will climb to the highest peaks. if you as a manager believe that pride is more important than the wealth of society you'd better close and go home. It is clear that there's nothing he/she can do there, and he/she better let someone to do what's right. I found myself placing in a similar situation and after many attempts when I tried to express my ideas I realized that something was not right..and why?...because despite the fact that I was told that there aren't good , many of them are found in practice. Since I started keeping my ideas for me the decline was seen in director because our ideas are used without admitting it never that were credited to someone else. And thus, step by step , she realized in time to appreciate subordinates and their ideas welcome in many situations, but..it took some time , enough to realize she needs help. I faced it a few times but without success..so this was the only option that made her understand thet of her pride and vanity can lose everything. I hope I could be helpful! good luck!

Managers are very cleaver to steal the idea and present it to their boss as their own. This is a common scenario for most of the manager, I do not see any problem if they can just credit the credit to the original suggester. They may want to take credit of what they do but owning someone else's idea and do not give the credit back is not a good idea. Keep going with your good ideas and suggestions, they day will come when people around you will appreciate it . Thank You for sharing.
