Man locks up wife for 16 years

Yet another shocker in the newspapers today... A Brazillian man locked up his wife in a basement cellar for 16 years while he lived with an other woman in the same house. The cellar area was barely 130 sq. ft (12 sq. m) and was littered with feces and dead cockroaches. The woman was found without clothes and wrapped up in a blanket. The windows of the room were shuttered and covered in a mould. The man told the police that his wife was mentally-ill and very aggressive hence, he'd locked her up cus he didnt want her to wander and get lost in this big bad world. The most surprising part of it is, that all thru these years, the son knew that the mother is being treated this way by the father and did nothing to save her. He too now faces charges for failing to come to the aid of someone in need. I fail to understand... what makes people behave this way? How could the son be so irresponsible and spineless to not save his mother from this torture of 16 years??? Have u ever been witness to any such horrific incidents?? Have u tried to save someone or just turned ur back stating its none of my business?

Oh thats really shocking story and I'm so sad for the mother having a son like that, all over the world there are mental facilities that can help, there are no reason to lock up an individual cause he/she has her own rights :-( I haven't experienced knowing a person like that well if i have i would definitely report to the authorities.

That is a real shocker!!! I can't digest that news in my mind yet, how come? 16 years? poor woman!!! My cousin was locked up by his wife for a week but all of my family helped him, we only knew he was locked up on the fourth day when we heard him shouting for help, but that poor woman, even if she wasn't mentally ill when she was locked up she would be in a deeply traumatized situation now!!!

Wow!! How can someone be like this? And how could this other woman he was living with not know? Think about it, if it was you in this situation, how would you feel? Personally I think the son should be held accountable for it, and unfortunately after this many yrs, what type of life can this wife lead from here? Personally I can never imagine someone being so Cruel to do something like this and I hope that he has many yrs. in jail to think about it.

This is insane! How could this son not care about his mother? How could no one else know this woman was locked in the basement? This unbelievible! On top of this he is living with another woman in the same house were his wife is locked in the basement? @What is wrong with people? Did this husband just lock his wife up so he could get rid of her and have an affair for 16 years? If the wife is not mentally impaired, why would she let herself be locked away like this? So many questions! I hope the son and husband pay for what they did!

I'm not trying to stick up for anyone in this situation, but if he's willing to do that to his wife, what make certain that the son wasn't a victim or worse, was raised by his father that was the right thing to do. No matter the situation, all parties need help. Not just jail or hold his hand through tax payers money to talk to a physiologist. Have the man, his son and his girlfriend who all knew of hiding the woman all be required by law or some sort to pay for the help they need and still maintain their housing and basic living. Make them pay for their 24 hour monitoring out of pocket as a result to their behavior. When non-payment, garnish wages. When all else fails why not trap and very restrict in a mental institution. And for payment, go after his family. They don't deserve special treatment and why not go for family and friends who also should have stopped the foolish behavior.

I think the court should give them a sentence so that in future no one think of hurting any person. I feel our law thinks of human right before giving any punishment but they don't think human right for the sufferer. When a person kill someone by knife he should b punished by knife. So next time one will think before doing any unlawful thing.

That's terrible how could a man do this to his wife and most importantly the son knew and he also didn't do anything. It's totally disgusting. what about that other woman who lived there. What type of woman she is who doesn't understand other woman's pain and misery. All of them should be given severe punishment.

A lot of weirdos are walking on the face of the Earth recently. This news is so disturbing. You think you know a person but turns out to be an a-hole. A lot of people are like this, especially the ones I've recently encountered.

So, he locks the wife up in a basement cell with no facilities to go to the bathroom or clean herself and no clothes. Yet says she is violent. Hmmmm...........

That is a horrible story! The son should have saved his mother somehow. But, how old was he? Was he old enough to save his mother? If he was, he maybe somehow threatened by his father. I think his father scared him that if he attempted to save his mother, he will somehow punish him. Or maybe, the son respects his father very much. I have never encountered such incidents for now. But if I have, I would try to ave the woman. Even though she was mentally ill, she is still a person so it is not necessary locking her to a dusty and messy basement.

Yes its really shocking!!! Even if it is true that the wife has mental illness, locking her up for 16 years is not the cure or solution. Even how violent the mentally ill wife is, you have to find means how deal with it and give her a nice environment so that she will not getting worst. Locking up to 16 years is a demon way of caring, curing or whatsoever.Person with mental illness/disorders should be treated good, give more attention and you have to study, observe, research HOW to deal person with such kind of condition. In this situation I think the husband and the son has the mental illness too why they can take it or afford to do it (by locking for 16 years)!!! I've never witness this kind of demonic incidents!!! If I will witness this kind of demonic incidents I'm sure I can't afford to turned my back and say its non of my business. I'm sure I will do something.
