You could probably get a USB/Firewire adapter. Not sure how effective those are. I did a search and found the following: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10314&cs_id=1031401&p_id=363&seq=1&format=1#largeimage The other thing that may cause a problem is the speed difference and whether you have the right driver for it to work.

I've tried this adapter but my laptop switched off without any notification. Maybe a problem with voltage or something like that, but it didn't damage my laptop.

Alternatively is to get a PCMCIA card that will provide the firewire port. Not sure if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot.
