omg! u r so rite! lol! Kidding aside, I hate textspeak. I have always been anal about spelling anyway, abbreviations and acronyms aside, so I spell everything out when texting. I agree that texting has to affect the spelling ability of a majority of people. I think they just throw the spell checker and/or dictionary out the window. No time to check and correct in this high speed world. I have even heard people talk in textspeak. Instead of Omigod, they say O-M-G. Huh?!

Yes, texting really affects spelling of words. You tend to shorten the words to minimize the space you are using but this is not helpful especially for children who also uses text messaging.

True indeed!I do not advise kids to use shortened words for texting at an early age.

I think that happens to a lot of people. They get used to writing words in abbreviated-like form. Others deliberately misspell a word or omit a letter to make it shorter and faster to key in. Call me old school, but when I text people, I key in the whole word.

I usually abbreviate words which is the cause why when you write words you tend to forget the correct spelling because I get used to the abbreviated words that I use for texting.I now write important words in full spelling not abbreviated to avoid misspelled words.

Hi dear, Basically I am not a texter and I always irritated with it. If some unavoidable situations come, I will finish with one sentence, but that I will write properly and no short cuts or abbreviations will use. I wanted to send the message properly and the read should not get confused on the message. thank-s

I'm a texter too and do shortcuts but never forgot how spell a word correctly, well atleast for the words I have heard already. Here in my place, spelling is a big deal and most of us are very careful when it comes to it.

One of the things that I promised myself long ago was that if I decided to start texting, I would do everything in my power to text with proper grammar and spelling. This proved to be a little difficult and time-consuming with my particular phone (3 letters to a number and 2 numbers to a key makes it a little hard to type), but I discovered the beauty of T9 and can now usually write properly. Unfortunately, punctuation is even harder on my phone, so I must admit that I have let that aspect of my texting-English slide. However, I still write properly in all other situations, so no, I don't think that texting has affected my spelling at all.

Hi. tanyamean. Welcome to myLot! I have seen many text messages and many comments that people have made on Facebook and to someone else cell phone. Most of the time, the misspell many words. And they also may shorten words too. Since I have read text messages from my husband, he spells words very correctly for someone that texts. Some people have a hard time with spelling words and they hit the key to quickly when they are texting too.

I always use shortcut in texting since i am lazy and whenever I chat too. Fortunately, I don't forget the real spelling of words and grammar- when I really need to write proper English, I can still do it.

I meet this problem with my PC. I like type instead of writing by pen. Now, some of words I can write, I only type by keyboard ! I know that this is not good. But I can leave the habits to type by PC...

Not really. I know how to separate texting composition from writing composition. I only use text words whenever I use my cellphone. But I pretty much know the spelling of words. Some text words have been very popularly used like OMG, LOL and FYI that the Oxford English Dictionary have already included them in their on-line listing? You might want to check this out. http://mashable.com/2011/03/24/oed-omg-lol/

I actually use text messaging a lot and one of things I can't do is actually use abreviations of the words and/or adding other letters to them. Its just confunsing to do that. I hate when people talk like that. I have some friends that instead of typing an "S" they type a "X". That's REALLY annoying. They literally do that in every letter -.- The only words I use are the most used like "lol, lmao, rofl, xD, ahah, etc.." and I do smiles too, but normal words I spell them right.
