Hello Every year 4th of February is observed as the World Cancer Day.The main area of concern for all the right thinking people is the lack of awareness among the public at large about the harmful effects of using tobacco products , especially cigarette, the cancer causing agent. The other variants / products of tobacco are cigars , bidis , panmasala etc. Though there are different types of cancer , I fell the cancer due to tobacco products should be addressed very urgently. Though the Government has in its arsenal an enactment concerning cigarettes and othe products with reference to advertisement , production and distribution, it is more or less in paper. Nothing tangible has happened to sensitise people about the harmful effects, early diagnosis and treatment. To have some meaningful effort to make the public aware on the cancer causing elements, its early detection and treatment , a mass campaign involving volunteers from the cross section of the society namely students , office goers , house wives, paramedical staff and Doctors is essential. A concerted effort is needed to make the campaign worthwhile. Even the Government can come out with a Mission statement with specific steps to be initiated towards this end , including a review mechanism of the progress made and problems that are still need immediate attention. At least one tobacco cessation clinic (for rehabilitation of addicts)/ center should be established in each village by Government with active participation by the manufacturers of tobacco products for their effective functioning / operation. samaritan123
