During our childhood (About 35 years back) taking private tuition was considered to be a disgraceful thing. It was thought that a student who was not competent enough in the school required private tuitions! Then the students attending private tuitions used to attend their classes secretly so that no body would know about this! But today private tuitions or Tutorials have become a must and attending a famous tutorial class has become status symbol! If asked any student why they want to attend a tutorial class when they are going to school, surpriingly the answer is that they are not taught any thing in the school! My point is in today's World when Schools are charging so high fee for students, is it really true that the students are not taught anything in school? Has the attending of Private tutorial classes become a must for todays student? What is the role of the school playing for the students? Please think and respond!

It is true in most public school in Indonesia. The quality of the teachers are dubious. Once they hired by the government, they do not motivate themselves to learn ore of their subjects, hence their theory are out of date. The government would not sack them for being lazy in teaching or for delivering wrong theory of a subject, so they do not see why they should learn more and delivering qualified knowledge to students. So, students are encouraged mostly by parents to go to tutorial classes to learn more of the subjects and be the top one in their public school. Many times, they are encouraged by their own teacher to take tutorial lesson with the said teacher outside of normal classes, for the teacher would earn more money besides their normal wage.

Yes dear Jennyze, You have said the truth! Not only in Indonesia it is also seen other parts of the World! Once a person becomes a teacher then he/she hardly takes any efforts to improvise upon the skill of teaching or rather try to upgrade himself/herself! It is very pathetic condition How surprising is the fact that School teachers themselves they are asking the students to go in for private tuitions ?! What can we expect from a student who will learn from a teacher with such selfish motto just to make some extra money? The so called noble profession .today seems to be going to the Dogs and it is really frustrating that we all are simply sitting and watching it as a silent spectators as the greed of the teachers is insatiable and the future of the student is also important! May God help to improvise the existing situation! Thanks for responding! I liked your response and please keep on posting! Good Luck!

Dear Jennyze, This is really a sad part of the story. Just for the reason that student is not taking tuition from a teacher the teacher is giving less marks to the child. This is nothing but exploiting the students and their parents. What a pity , to get good marks a student has to take tuition from the teacher who is teaching him in the school. This is ridiculous and simply a black mailing! In India in some states there is a ban on school and college teachers that they can't take private tuition to prevent such situations! Subjecting a student to an uncomfortable situation if parents lodge a complain is some ting which can not be tolerated by any parent! I really feel bad about the situation prevailing dear friend!

The most sad thing is when a teacher gives a very low mark on students who do not take a private lesson with them. This happens many times in my country so parents have to send their children to this private lesson and pay more just to get a decent mark. And Parents who complained about a teacher or a subject or the school, their children will face uncomfortable treatment from the teacher or school.

Hello AKRao, As from my experience I will say why I am sending my child for tuition. I am working and I have a small child at home. After reaching the home I have to attend the home chorus then I have to sit with my elder son (now he is in 4th) for his home works. I can do it but always my younger son disturbs me much and I faced much problem to handle him. I started his tuition in last year, just for doing the home works and complete the questions answers. His character is, he don’t want to sit with his studies until I sit with him. His school is teaching and asked the students to attend the question answer by their own. My son needs some assistance sometimes as he gets confused with the language. Now the tuition teacher is asking him to do the work himself and she can help him if there is any doubts. I am free from the burden and I can spend that time with my younger one. (now he is three and started to learn, and he demands more attention if I sit with his brother, lol). My son is not going to any tuition centre, instead he is going to a lady like me, and she is taking tuition for kids as she loves teaching. I found that she is dedicated for her work and am satisfied too. His school is not encouraging private tuition but they are asking parents to spend time with kids on every day basis. I am trying to spend some time with him though it is less time to check his diary and books and sometimes reading some stories etc.

Hi dear Sreekala, I can understand the situation of yours! People like you who are working, for them sending their wards to tutors becomes more or less a must as the kids they need attention from elderly people. Now because of the nuclear family system what we are having today in India, most of the families living in cities are having wife, husband and kids as the members. So until unless we have some elder persons to look after the needs of the children in their studies or we have one of our kid grown up to the extent that he/she can take care of the younger one, these kids have to be sent to the tutors, which is quite understandable! I feel really happy to know that the school in which your child is studying is discouraging the parents to send their wards to private tuition! It is a good start as for the parents who can really spend time their children this becomes an opportunity to spend some quality time with the kids which not only will help these kids to study but the interaction between the parent and the child will create an intimate bond which will last for life time! Thanks Sreekala...As usual your response is appreciated!

Hi dear, Thank you so much for come back with your comments. In fact we are helpless and feel so tensed that we cannot react on such situations. All these are running with a corporate mind and most of things working under the influences of management and government authorities. You may be well aware that there are protest against the hike of fees and the government kept the issue for further researches given a few months time and afterwards suggested not to increase. However, they implemented for few months and increased more on that. Govts. also is acting upon the private personnel and pressure from such parties. There are a lots of internal politics happening in all segments which never comes to the common man and they will nicely handle all things as per wish. That is why I told you that we are helpless and people's combined effort also never attended because common man has no unity. Ever though we do something also, will never get honored. Fate and bad luck. We are destined to move up and down how thing floating the running water. Thank-s

Its so true! The internal politics are eating the system and the progress of the Nation like termites, where the apparently every thing looks fine but from inside every thing is rotten! I understand for the sake of saving one's seat, the leaders won't mind sacrificing anything and any one! Then common man is the ultimate target whom they can lure and lucre to their advantage and they are then simply discarded like a rot thrown in a dust bin! The fate of common man in our country in the hands of such leaders with such perverted thoughts is really at stake! But then what all we can do, unless we don't stand united except for saying that , let the things go like the way they are going! Thanks You very much dear Thanks , I sincerely appreciate your efforts and especially the thoughts with which you have posted your response of this ! Thanks again!

Hi dear, This is an unorganized sector where people make lots of money. I know the man who earn a good salary income and having a higher level position in a private company resigned the job and started private tuition classes and earning 10 times more in his income. This is one side of the business. The luckiest group is the school teachers, principal and the management. Students are dying and trying their level best by studying from the tuition classes and all the credit goes to school. Even some of the teachers comments that if you have any doubts, please refer it from the tuition teacher, and this is happened last week in the class of my son’s school. They are so free and the answer to your last question is that – what is the role of school teachers? Yes it is there duty that whatever is not providing in the tuition centers – that is, except teaching, all other activities. They are treated there in the school like slaves and many in much school, it is not a pronoun, and is a real fact. They are doing 100% business and earning above 200%. It is their belief that children are become smart in studies because of their hard work. But no one think that the role of tuition teachers, even though they are earning. Many are much satisfied with their tuition classed and several times I made attempt to don't send the children to schools and satisfy with the tuitions. But as the government is not insisting or supporting to the system, we are forced to send them in both the places. Even the children are not want to school, and my son asking why they are being send to school, they just monitor everything and studies really happening only in tuition places. Thank-s

Dear Thanks ! There is not even a single sentence in your response which I can disagree with! I fully endorse your views! How pathetic is the prevailing situation! There was a time in India when students used to live in Gurukul and could learn every thing from their Guru there! But today school have become just a Government approved organisation to channelise the students or rather permitting the students just to appear in the Board Examinations! How can this be changed? Will it ever change? Any ways, I am really happy that you have caught the crux of my discussion ! My sincere thanks for your hearty response!

In the first place, tutorial is meant only to supplement what's been learned from school. This is also a way to give additional techniques to make learning possible and easy. A tutor 's responsibility is to augment what has to be learned not to totally teach the student what's he's supposed to learn in school. I think private tutorial are having misconceptions now a days!

Yes dear EdnaReyes, You got my point! Instead of using tutorial classes as a supplement tool now a days people have started using it as a primary tool of learning, neglecting the School, which is really a pathetic thing! Thanks for responding!

hi, I strongly agree with your view. In my country, most of the parents will send their children to private tuition class. They wan their children to pass an exam and yet wan they become more talented than other child. When i was a girl, attend tuition class was disgraceful and people will look down on you. But now, tuition become a business pipeline. People apply a license to open a tuition class and earn more money beside the normal wage.

Yes Dear Spasoo! In today's World of Glamour even the Education also has been promoted as a product and is being commercialised! Once the event which was 'Disgraceful' has become a matter of Pride ! Is this the part of evolution? Are we travelling in proper direction? Thanks dear friend for responding, I fully agree with your views and appreciate the efforts you have taken for participating in the discussion! All the best!

Yes, the topic has no end. Just an example, last week there was the school anniversary pgogram. My daughter in the 7th std. has a dance program and she was one of the participant in one group. The teachers asked them to dress up and reach in school by 4:30 as the program starts by 5:00 in the evening. In the after noon we started make up s and all and by 4:00 it completed and we send the child by the time they insisted. As it was a typical South Indian dance, there were a lot of make ups and costume dressings. I went to the back stage and the teachers asked me to get out of the place and told me that your children are safe here. When I saw, on child was almost sitting and sleeping on the corner of the green room. They were tiered, thirst and hungry and due to heavy dress and make ups all of them were so tiered to reach on the state. When I asked about it, they told, this is not the time to think of it and we have so many other things to do..... They called up for the dance near about 10:40. My son withdrawn from the dance as he didn't like the way they organised it. I just mentioned this one incident that the life there is not different than this and this is only one similar example among the daily many issues. However, as long as we are the people in need, we have to suffer for their dictatorships.

You are absolutely right dear friend YSKGandhi, now a days parents are putting lot of stress on the students and schools are also taking keen interest in teaching as they know that most of the students are attending Private tutorial classes! The Key factor in learning as you say should be like a 'Playing' where student should never have to under go ant stress! Thanks for responding!
