I need to go to the bathroom to think

I've noticed that the ideas I get are often influenced by where I'm at. Like when I'm in the bathroom, I get crazy ideas. But when I'm in the bedroom, I tend to be more retrospective, thinking of the events that took place in my life. And if I need to think of work-related ideas, I go to the garage where I sometimes sit in my car and think. It's odd but it works for me. How about you?

Lately to be honest, I haven't thought or have had time to think of topics for mylot, and when I do get ideas to write about, I am no where near a computer and by the time I log on, I can't even remember what I thought off, which is extremely frustrating because most of the times I come up with really good ideas. But hey whatever works for you, just keep up the good work and most importantly have fun doing so!!!

That happens to me. Sometimes I can't even come up with ideas when I'm in front of my computer. I should probably carry a small notebook to jot down any idea that comes yo my head.

I normally I have my iPad with me at all times, but to be honest with you that has never crossed my mind, I might consider that in the future.

Creations are done in solitude. I don't think there is anything odd in it. Solitude and unperturbed mind are two conducive conditions of imagination. Sometimes I want to be left alone. People around me think I am depressed whereas it's some idea that I am working on. I don't claim to be highly creative person. However I do love to think about the things that I read or the things that I write about. It feels as if a long train of cerebral pulses are moving inside my head, continuously and it doesn't want to be broken up. If someone or something interrupts me at that time, I feel really very irritated. I find it difficult to return to the place where I left.

I can understand that people need solitude and quiet for them to think. But sometimes certain types of ideas pop in your head when you're in a particular place.

...and that's because our mind has a peculiar tendency to associate things with memory. This is called encoding. When we take information into our mind, we encode them. Then after a few revisions the information thus learned are transferred from short term memory to our long term memory and there it stays for some time. Now when we try to remember the same information we just revive those associations. It is amazing how our mind creates these associations. I remember reading a very interesting story about mental association. A lady once went to a friend's place for the first time. But when she entered into the house he felt as if she's been there before. She could even remember the stairs, the doors and which passage leads to which place. People started to believe that she's been reincarnated. Upon further investigation they discovered that when the lady was a mere infant she's brought to that place. The child's senses rapidly associated the quaint images inside her head. It was long forgotten, but was so strongly associated that being in that place at once revived the past.

Sometimes I'm the same as you, I get influenced by where I'm at, especially with people all around me. When I'm around people who just gives bad vibes on whatever they do I immediately feel that vibe that's why I stay away from those group of people. You know when you feel like a certain person is a lot trouble? When I feel that, I either move out or ignore them completely. I don't wanna be a snob so if a conversation is unavoidable, I just try my best to look interested.

Yes, I know that feeling, and I also try to avoid being with those people. It's like being in a group who gossips. Even if you don't want to, they tend to suck you into the conversation and before you know it, you're gossiping yourself.

Most of my thoughts are influenced by the people around me. Every time I come near people who are so positive, I feel so inspired. Whenever I am with happy friends, I feel happy as well. When I am alone thou, I only lie on my bed and think of the things I want. This has always been the case for me. Wherever I may be, I am able to think well. All I needed to do is to feel relaxed and it will do for me.

I guess almost all of us think better when we're relaxed. But some us also think well under pressure. Different strokes for different folks :)

I sometimes do that - thinking while taking a shower, and sing at the same time :)

It is not surprising. Whenever you don't have any activity or you a routine work, your mind begins to think. It is because the mind has time to do so.

Oh, yes. Distractions do indeed make it hard for the brain to spew out ideas.

I am also the same depending where i am and how im feeling its very odd that things pop in our minds this way.

Hmm...maybe the environment around you inspires you & they jump start your thought engine? Haha!~I find that I think a lot just right before I go to bed which often times can be not that healthy as I need to sleep. It's because I'm ready to go to bed & the mind is more relaxed & I thin of things that could have been improved / done better, how I should do certain things tomorrow, to be more organized & stuff like that. Usually I just write them down, at least that helps to get the thoughts out of my mind & help me to accomplish more stuff the next day.

Most of my thinking happens when I walk, since I don't have a car I take the bus and walk a lot and that's when my mind always works the best.

Back in college, I do that quite frequently especially before my exams. It's one way for me to recall the lessons I've learned.

You are not alone. I always find myself in that situation where new ideas pop out of my mind while taking a bath in the bathroom or while eliminating my waste sitting atop a toilet bowl. Funny, but true!

I can get a good idea when I am happy or relaxed. However, sometimes I get it when I am pushed and under pressured.

I know what you mean. And sometimes being under pressure can bring out even the best of ideas.

There is actually some science behind this. Your brain is used to behaving differently in different areas, because of years of repeating the same thing. I once had my computer in my room once(which I used to play a very mind-demanding video game), and after a few months I noticed it was hard for me to sleep. Well, my mind began to associate my bedroom with concentration and fun, instead of relaxation and sleep, so I had a very hard time getting to sleep in it. But, I took the computer out, and after a couple of weeks, things started to get back to normal. There are a bunch of things that can happen like this: exercise is harder done in your home, because you associate your house with non-work type things etc...

You're right, it has something to do with association and repetition. Never thought of it that way, though.
