The smoking ban. What do you think?

With the ban soon to come into force, do you think that it will be self regulating, or are we likely to see continual news stories about fines issued to people who have been caught smoking in public places?

Given the increased signs of allergies and asthma, I think the smoking ban is a great idea. Smoking related illnesses, do not affect only those that smoke, but everyone they come into contact with. For me, I look at it like pollution. We try so hard to keep our air clean, and work so hard to keep litter off the ground. I am sure many will "test" the law in the beginning, but eventually something positive has to come from it.

It is already banned in public places, transports, bars and restaurants in my country. I am not smoking anymore, but when it has been banned in bars, I remember that I stopped to take my morning coffee in a bar. Now, I take it again in a bar and I find good to have no smoke around me.

Congratulations China! It brings you into line with most of the rest of the world now banning smoking in many areas. It has been a long time coming. I'm not sure if it is a total & complete ban or just around food, etc. It will of course be difficult to police. What is happening elsewhere is that fines are imposed, but only if there's evidence or if caught in the act by officials. The system is highly reliant on ordinary citizens to report any incidences. I really don't believe these reports will make headlines. The thing is now to make the people aware of exactly what constitutes an offense & who to report it to & how. I don't see how it can be made self-regulating any other way in a cost-efficient manner.

I am really not aware about the smoking ban, is it in China? I am a smoker and I would never want that of course. But given the situation, it would still be great to respect non-smoking places and other people around you when you puff and smoke.
