Working Graveyard

Hello! Who here works the graveyard shift? How do you like it? Does it pays good? what are its pros and cons? I've been working for the night shift for almost 1 year and a half now and in my opinion, there are the good days and the bad days. What is hard about this job is sleeping during daytime when the sun is up. Also, sleeping with all the noise arounf your neighborhood. But what I like about working at this time of the day is that time seems to pass by quickly. Also, it pays better since it has night differential. How about you? Do you want to work at night time?

I used to work nights myself once upon a time, this is when I was working in security. I would work twelve hour shifts and despite it being very quiet it was still hard work! I remember feeling absolutely exhausted as I was unable to sleep during the day as a result of workmen and drills and so forth! The pay wasn't bad. Some companies pay more when you work nights whilst others keep you on the same pay as the day shift, this applied in my case. I must admit, I did enjoy the peace! At times there wasn't a soul to be seen! I did see quite a few winos, they used to stop by in the doorway of the building! Anyway, I will never work nights again, I made this vow to myself! I think that working nights upsets your body clock! Andrew

yes, working in the graveyard shifts greatly affects the body clock. working in the night shift for eight hours and going home after will not guarantee you a sound sleep. I once worked in the night shift too, and will never work again, i promised myself because I know that after going home, your body will not shift to its sleeping mode. Ask anyone who is working or who have worked on a night shifts and they will assure you of the fact that you cannot sleep yet once you are at home. They usually have to stay awake for hours before finally dozed off. Your body will finally get used to that routine but we must be aware of the impending health issues that comes with it. - bams

My boyfriends works the graveyard shift, and I think since he has been working like that for a couple of years now, he prefers it more as compared to having the regular shift. There is no traffic, you get additional pay for the night differential, plus he has no trouble sleeping now since he is so used to it already. Though sometimes I wish he would have the regular shift, and the regular days off, so we can go out during the weekends like normal couples do.. and we don't have to worry if our vacation would coincide with his shift. Hehehe.

Advantage of working graveyard: Working midnights usually means you'll be with a lesser group of people in a quieter environment, and you'll routinely understand each others' single, third-shift lifestyle. You're very possible to form a closer bond with your co-workers than you would on a normal shift. Disadvantage of working graveyard: If you're not cautious, working third shift can lead to a need of sunlight exposure. We need a definite amount of sunlight every day for Vitamin D and to fight off depression. If you do begin working midnights and find yourself getting depressed, take a fifteen minute walk when the sun comes up to give yourself a normal pick-me-up.
