New to playing guitar. Acoustic vs. Electric.

February 24, 2011 7:00pm CST
I recently started learning how to play the guitar. I started out with an acoustic before my boyfriend got me an electric guitar for Christmas. Now, I barely find time for my acoustic because there is so much more to do on the electric. My guitar teacher swears by electric guitars, but is there anyone who prefers acoustic over the electric? If so, why is that?

I do love acoustic more than electric. Aside that its easier than electric, I just love the music it produces.

I think I prefer acoustic better, actually - for purely sentimental reasons. My dad has been a guitarist for over thirty years. When I was a little girl, he would play me to sleep every night on his Gibson. Now, whenever I hear an acoustic guitar, it makes me so securely drowsy and gives me the best feeling! :)

I play both, but am going through an acoustic phase again these days. I'm not going to tell you what to choose. Go with your heart. And enjoy it. Play your instrument with the emphasis on play. There is no right or wrong answer to this question.

I have two electric-acoustic guitars, but I prefer electric guitars. I use to play them at my friends place. I also think it's easier to learn and to play with.

I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years...while both and acoustic are amazing instruments, I can tell this...even the most accomplished and talented musicians in the business will ALWAYS play their acoustics. Accomplishing and becoming astute at playing acoustic WILL help you become better on electric. Most electric guitarists have a tendency to mask their techniques with effects and volume. whereas on acoustic, you are challenged by skill and technique, as you cannot hide behind power, volume, distortion and effects. Learn your craft on acoustic and electric, but to take your skill to new levels, play acoustic. Use your acoustic to learn some Spanish guitar and the blues...then take those skills and transfer them to electric...see what happens!

i prefer to play with an acoustic guitar more than an electric guitar, for the reason that acoustic guitars are handy, you can play with it at any time, at any where. and with or without the other instruments, acoustic guitar sounds and works great! in my own honest prank opinion, electric guitars are good only when you playing with other instruments, like if you are playing with your band. acoustic guitar is for all around :)

Yeah I had an acoustic and then got an electric later on and never went back. I like jamming chords on acoustics and playing licks and riffs on the electric. The electric has so much power that its hard going back to playing mostly acoustic.
