Nowadays, we are told about the dangers that some foods and additives can cause to our health. With this in mind, how do you decide whether it should be sugar, sweetners or honey in your drinks. Cans and bottles of Pepsi, Coke, etc now come in many different flavours and regular, diet, or zero (sugar) and when it comes to tea or coffee again we have the choice to add (or not) sugar, sweetners or honey to our drink. Sugar, causes weight gain, dental problems, etc. But give me that sugar rush and added energy everytime! Which types of drinks do you drink? What do you add to your drinks (tea & coffee)?

I love a big glass of sweet tea!!!! I really love it!! Especially on a hot summer day!! But I also have to have a cup of coffee in the morning and I like cream and sugar!! I get tired of cokes all the time so I will go for water!! I love water at home in a tall glass and a slice of lime or lemon in it!! Yummy!!

I prefer Sugar for beverages like Coffee, Tea and Milk. Also I prefer sugar for Juice and stuffs like that. Honey is preferred for Bread items. I usually don't prefer sweetner unless really needed.

I think there are a lot of things to be health conscious of and how healthy what I sweeten my drinks with isn't all that important to me. I like the taste of sugar the best so sugar it is. If I lived on tea -really, if I had more tea than you can imagine- I might switch to honey but since that's not the case...

Yeah, if we all listened to the health experts I guess we would have little choice in what we ate and drunk. I really do feel that my body needs sugar on a daily bases. So, it is sugared drinks for me!

I'm very conscious about sugar. Sugar (refined) is truly unhealthy if consumed excessively. Even for better health we just need very limited sugar, as we get sugar from many foods, such as fruits, juice, water (Dr. Oz explains this), etc.. I prefer black tea without sugar or with honey, but my coffee is with sugar. Just recently I've found out that sugar feeds candida disease/yeast infection. Diabetes is also on the rise all over the world, particularly in developing countries--competing with cancers and heart diseases. With common unhealthy lifestyle, we need to be cautious about our sugar intake. Carbohydrate is also source of sugar. Carb foods are processed in the body to become sugar for energy. So once our body has problems with sugar, our diet would be unpleasant. What also concerns me is Aspartame, an artificial sweetner. The dangers of Aspartame is widely known. It can be found in so many processed foods, including diet drinks. Here are some links to aspartame awareness: Aspartame Awareness Weekend (rense.com/general92/aspar.htm) USDA Certified Organic's Dirty Little Secret: Neotame (farmwars.info) But no need to worry about finding sugar substitute. There are some natural ones: stevia (the leaves), xilytol, palm sugar, honey. They can be expensive in markets. I'm opting for stevia, and going to order the leaves in bulk (I've found the cheap one in my country) and the plant. Most shops sell stevia at very high prices). Food prices are skyrocketing. It's good to be independent and have our own sugar plant.

Oh, so right. The price of natural products, organic foods, herbal remedies, etc. Just keeps going up and up. Most average families just can't afford these alternative choices even if they wanted them. For me...I'll stick to my refined sugar and anned drinks. Good luck with yur sugar plant.

We still need sugar in order to survive. The more natural it is the better. I have attended a health information seminar and have materials that say that refined white sugar and sweeteners are not good for one's health so we usually purchase brown sugar(commonly called in the Phillipines as washed sugar) or if you have the budget muscuvado sugar is also good. There is a cheap brown sugar where the brownish color falls on almost being dark brown which is also not good for the body so its the sugar colored in between white and dark brown that is good for the body. Natural honey has also many health benefits as well.

Hi Starrose, We tend to view brown sugar as a sweetner for coffee or to use in baking not as a general sweetner for all drinks. Most people only have white sugar in their homes. The other thing that has become quite fashionable in cafes and restaurants is rock sugar. I still prefer the taste of white sugar though.

I prefer sugar but I cannot have sugar because of my diabetes so I use equal or splenda. They taste the same to me. I am a big Coca Cola fan, I've been drinking that since I was a kid. I can stand energy drinks. Don't believe all the hype about diet soda. I have been drinking it for years and I'm fine. Just don't drink anything too much because to much of anything is no good for you.

Yes everything in moderation and I think the body can cope, it is when we over indulge that things go wrong.

Hello Cher, Tea, I only drink about once a month, but coffee is a daily ritual. Without it I can't function. As for adding sugar to things I eat, I don't bother as I find the amount the producers add before packaging or canning is sufficient.

Hi. LeighB. When I make tea or coffee, I will add a little bit of sugar to my drinks. If it is a soda, I don't add anything to it. I used to use Truvia and Splenda, the No calorie sweetener to my tea in 2008. I have not done this in so long now. I have used Truvia in 2010 in my cereal in the mornings.

Hi Cream, Soda is good just as it is. Interesting though, how you have reverted back to sugar. As 3 cups of coffee is my breakfast and I never eat cereal, the only place the sugar goes is straight into the drink.

Tea and coffee without any sweetener. On Sundays it is coffee with milk and with honey, all the rest time it is black coffee.

At home we use brown sugar to sweeten our beverages and to add a bit of sweetness to some viands we are cooking. Brown sugar is said to be healthier to use than white sugar. White sugar have undergone a lot of processing to make it finer and whiter, and it's said that processed foods are bad to health. That's why we choose brown sugar to sweeten what needs to be sweetened in our foods.

Hi SimplyD, Yes, they do tell us that brown sugar is more natural and less processed. After all, sugars natural colour is a dark brown, so the darker the sugar the more pure it is and unbleached. I tend to only add sugar to my drinks, not really into adding sugar to the cooking as I find most foods have their own natural sweetness and don't need more added. Thanks for your answer.

In the past i have had sweetners to add to my hot drinks like coffee or tea.I now just have sugar with drinks as i did not notice a weight change using just the sweetners.I also drink alot of coke as well, mainly of an evening time, as it is a case of i can sit and relax and no worry about getting up to make drinks.

Hi Joystick, that is one of the benefits about making a pot of coffee, there is always a refill waiting, and you aren't forever boiling water for your next cup. So I can understand why you swirch in the evening to coke.

I use sugar if I make tea or coffee. I do not think anyone can replace sugar if we want to make the drink. or maybe you could use a low-calorie sugar if you are afraid of getting fat.

Hi Ernest, For me even low-calorie sugar has a different taste to regular sugar and it just spoils my coffee.

Hi denniskriek, Thanks for the response. Honey sure does have some good medicinal values and as you say, is natural too, so it isn't like damaging your health nor body. How do you find the taste of coffee and tea change with the adding of honey?
