In regard to the campaign for no plastic bag during the certain days, the consumers were classified into 4 categories: 1. Only the few brought their recycle bags along during their shopping. 2. There were many consumers, inclusive of foreign labors who paid RM0.20 (~ $0.065 USD) per bag during their shopping. 3. Some of the consumers didn't use the recycle bag or pay for the plastic bag. They just placed their goods in the shopping carts or trolleys. 4. Some consumers preferred not to shop during the day for no plastic bag. About the category number 2, most of the foreign labors walked all the way to the store to purchased the groceries. They really needed the bag to keep their goods. In conclusion, this campaign was failed at our place. What will be your opinions? Should there be any alternative to promote for not using plastic bag effectively?

I think it is good that the government is implementing this No Plastic Bag Day. In fact, this campaign is working out very well in Penang. Nowadays, you see less plastic bags being used in hawkers stalls and almost none at all in supermarkets. I always spare a few bags in my car, be it recycled or canvas made. Even if the people walked out of the store without their groceries, eventually they would have to come back to buy them because it is their daily need. If every stores were to stop using plastic bags, then people would certainly have no choice but to bring their own bags when they shop. It's all a matter of attitude in each person. What alternative to promote not using plastic bags? 1. Instead of RM0.20, charge RM2 for each plastic bag used, it would be sort of like a fine for using plastic bags. 2. Government should not renew the licence of businesses that did not support this No Plastic Bag Day policy. 3. Government should ban the use of plastic bags. 4. Recycled bags should be sold at a cheaper price. People should learn to care more for the environment. Each individual has a responsibility to keep our environment safe and healthy and everyone should do their part. After all, the earth is the only home we have.

Yes, I totally agree to you. We should stop manufacturing the plastic bags and keep all of those plastic bag fabrication manual in the national museum. Once the consumers and the retailers can not get the plastic bags in the market, they will go for the other environment friendly bags.

Hi aeiou, ( all vowels ) This plastic comedy is on the stage for quite long time. Many times they have been banned and again when the use of plastic bag started again there was a ban. In India after the recycled plastic bags of too dirty sort was banned people either carried along proper bags for shopping or they got the fine quality plastic bags and those fine and non toxic bags started changing their color. I my view the respective govt should come out with non toxic carry bags to help people do the shopping.

Plastic bag is the most convenient bag to keep our wet and dry goods. This is the reason the plastic bags are still popular. To protect the environment, we should use an environment friendly bag to replace the plastic bag. This is exactly what you have stressed out. Before banning the plastic bag, the relevant parties should ensure the new proposal for the replacement will be workable before the implementation. At last, the end users are suffering for the consequences.

At the moment in my state Selangor, no plastic bag on Saturdays. If I planned to do shopping on that day, I will bring along with me a recycle bag. However, it is still not practical because I do not like to put frozen food and dry food together in the same recycle bag. So, I will only choose to buy either dry of frozen food. Therefore, I would rather shop on other days than Saturdays. I will still go to the Shopping Centre but I do not shop for groceries, I would go for movies and eating out. There are many people prefer to just put them in the trolley and later unload them into the car booth. For those foreigners who do not have own transport, I think it is better for them to bring their own recycle bags or shop on Sundays.

In the conclusion, we still need bags during our shopping. In certain countries, they have started for not using the plastic bag many years ago. In fact, they were using the paper bag. Before we go for shopping, we can't decide the number of goods or things we are going to purchase. As such, it is very hard for us to bring the right number of recycle bags along during our shopping. In my point of view, the consumers are still needed to be provided the bags. Those bags can be paper bags or any other recyclable bags.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I remembered my sister went for shopping on Saturday at a boutique and they provide nice paper bag. This should be the way, go for recyclable paper bag as an alternative. In this case, we shoppers no need to be burdened with extra charges for the plastic bag.

In my city there is a total ban on use of plastic carry bags. Any one found carrying goods in plastic bags is liable for fine upto Rs.500/- When implemented there was applause from all sides. But, sadly , the government just implemented it and forgot about it as every vendor or vegetable/fruit seller can be seen carrying plastic bags and people can be seen carrying their goods in plastic carry bags. Hope administration will wake up and take strict action against those not following this ban.

ha! ha! ha! Banning plastic bag is seemed a political slogan at your place. In addition, fining the consumers for using the plastic bag will not be fair too. First of all, the government should revoke the license in manufacturing the plastic bags and no plastic bags can be imported from foreign countries. The government should propose an alternative bag which is friendly to the environment in the market. Gradually, the plastic bag can be phased off.

Why would you prevent people from using plastic bags anyway? They're recycle-friendly in the first place and they prevent from using paper bags which can then cause less trees to be cut down.

You are right too. Banning the plastic bags do not save the earth. This is an article which support you point of view. http://blog.thestar.com.my/permalink.asp?id=33079 Before we make any conclusion about this topic, I hope you can read about this article as your reference too: http://www.environmentalleader.com/2009/06/10/top-un-environmental-official-ban-plastic-bags/ For me, we should ban the plastic bags widely.

Yes, you are right. Other countries have practiced in using the paper bags since many years ago. Biodegraded bag can be an alternative too. Those who are still using the plastic bags should change the mindset. We really need the co-operation from all of the parties to build up a healthy living environment.

I think the end of using plastic bags begins with the stores finding alternative solutions, it should not be left up to the customers. If that is the case for us to find alternatives, then let us, the consumers, price the items we purchase. We had no options when the stories went from paper to plastic, so it is their job to stop the plastic bags.

When there is something better and cheaper to replace the plastic bag, naturally the society will accept the alternative and ignore the plastic bag. This is exactly what you are stressing. We hope someday the plastic bag can be fully replaced.

I am in the category 3 where I seldom bring recycle bag to shopping and buy groceries. If there are no plastic bag supply from the shop, I will just put everything in the cart and then dump everything into my car. I think for people who have car can always do this even thought if there are no plastic bag supply by the shop and they can also request not to use plastic bag on other day if they want to save the environment. Since the shop is still offering plastic bags on the no plastic day by charging a certain amount of money for a plastic bag, I do not think this campaign will be successful but it will only let the shop earn more by charging the plastic bags. They should insist on no plastic bag instead of ask the consumer to pay for the plastic bag. To ask the consumer to pay for the plastic bag will only encourage people who willing to pay for the plastic bag continue to use plastic bag. They should encourage them to buy and use the recycle bag instead of selling the plastic bag to those who request for plastic bag.

I were the same as you by placing everything in the cart and shifted to my car booth later. Sometimes, I requested a paper box to keep all of my goods so that, there won't be a mess inside my car booth later. For me, buying plastic bags is not a wise move. Buying a recyclable bag is still acceptable.

If the stores get rid of the plastic bags they definitely will have to come up with an alternate. Not everyone can afford the re-usable bags. Some of the bags are $2 a piece and that will not go well because if we have 5 - 6 bags worth that is quite an expense. So either people will adapt to bring their own or find a store that does allow them to get the free plastic bags. It is not convenient to carry groceries without the handles.

In fact, the recycle bags are expensive and not recyclable. Some of the recycle bags can not last for long too. For instance, the color will gradually fade, the handling parts will easily break and so on. There will be another issue in handling those unusable or damaged recycle bag later.

But soon sooner and sooner they never seen in my town they are so many plastic covers are selling when the government put the auction but they never listen they never listen the words what the government is saying towards us. Some are selling this bags for huge rates. When we take some vegetables definately we want the covers. At that time what they do they put that vegetables in cover only.

Before using the plastic bag, they used the newspaper to wrap the vegetables which we bought form the market. Nowadays, most of the old newspaper are sent to recycle and the plastic bag is very convenient to keep the wet and dry goods. The government should put in their effort to ban the plastic bag. They should not make it as a slogan for banning the plastic bag only. However, I think it is still a long way to replace the plastic bag.

It's simple, plastic bags can be defined as illegal. In Italy from the 1st of January of this year it's no more possible to use plastic bags. In place of them markets sell biodegradable bags. It's a good thing for the nature.

It is the same too. From my understanding, the Jusco and the Tesco are both using the bags that made by cassava. Those bags are biodegradable type. In my opinion, those are the real recyclable bags.
