How do you feel about patriotism and your home & homeland?

I grew up moving around often in my life and now that I am older. I still tend to want to move from place to place. Lately I would like to settle in the city I live at. I feel so fond of the country I live in, such that I gave up my native citizenship and served in the military for my new adoptive country. I feel that much love for it. So lately I found someone I like, thought I would love to spend my life with. She turns out to be very patriotic about her country, and that is good in my book; but it really hurt my feelings to learn how easy it was for her to talk trash about my country's leader. Now I am not one who cares much for politics, but since I know she wants to come live in my country. I felt bad knowing she wants to come here, but is so quick to talk trash about it. Do you feel its right to want to live in some particular place and not have a sense of care and appreciation for that place? How do you feel about people who are likely to talk trash about your home? Do you feel I am over reacting? I would love learn from your thoughts.

I can relate to what you are saying. I think there needs to be a certain amount of apprecitaion and loyalty to a place you decide to go..key word..decide. I could not imagine sharing a home with someone that disliked or trashed a place that I felt passionately or cared for very much. It would be hard.

Criticizing your country's leader is not the same as criticizing your country. I love the US, but I don't always agree with everything our government is doing.

If you're going to live in another country of course you'll have to respect it just like how its citizens respect it. Don't talk trash about the country or place because you're bound to get in trouble.

I think patriotism will fade out with time as people become more global minded. Living in America, I think people get really defensive about the nation even when it is clear that the government has made stupid mistakes. Patriotism often leads to blindness. If you think about the southern states of America, they are often blindly patriotic. But the cities like New York are more open to criticizing the government. I think it is because people in New York have more perspective, seeing how things work among other groups of people, traveling and understanding the rest of the world. Still, people shouldn't talk trash about a place if they are going to live there. Criticism is one thing, disrespect is another.
