After creating a furor among Indian press and public after stating that Indians are not large hearted, Afridi today made a turn around stating that he was wrongly understood and misquoted by the press on his remarks made when his attention was drawn to the statement made by India's one of the world cup heroes Gautam Gambhir that the world cup victory is dedicated to the victims of Mumbai Terror attack. He felt that Gambhir was trying to raise the anti Pakistan sentiment on his remark after he had tried to improve it by his remarks made after landing in Pakistan that Pakistan should not treat India as enemy. Afridi explained that he enjoyed his cricket in India and that he loves Indian people and that he got lo of love and affection from Indian people. The fact of the case is it will take lot of time for Indian public to forget the carnage that took place in Mumbai terror attack and involvement of Pakistan in that attack is beyond as far as Indian public is concerned. Afridi if he feels so much about Indian public then he should respect Indian sentiments on Mumbai attack and remembering of the victims of those attack on their one of the most happy moments. What is your take on this?

As the saying goes, "Stupid is as stupid does". Afridi made a stupid remark about having big heart. Any other country would have reacted in different manner to the mumbai attacks. India had big heart and beleived that this could be solved by dialogue. That shows India's heart. Actions speak louder than words. For political reasons he has to make a turn around on what he said.

You are right any other country would have reacted differently on Mumbai attack. May be we are looking too far ahead before taking any drastic action. World considers as cowards on that front.

Yes, the Indian establishment has only itself to blame for the mess in this country with respect to terrorism. We’ve always tried to wish the bitter truth away and pretend that we can talk with terrorists when the truth is there for everybody to see…until and unless the political ideology and ISI stranglehold over society changes in Pakistan, there is no point in talking to them. The ordinary Pakistanis may / may not want peace and dialogue with India, but what matters is what the ISI and its bosses want and how well they manage to brainwash the people on supporting such terrorist activities. On our east, look at the Chinese aggression in the NE…first the Chinese continued claiming Sikkim as their territory, now they are demanding Arunachal Pradesh, they are giving special visa to Kashmiris, they are heavily building infrastructure on sensitive border areas…yet, what are we doing??? NOTHING…just mouthing niceties and squirming to call a spade a spade. Actually, we’ve always tried to remain neutral and maintain a goody goody image, but its not really helped us anywhere.

I agree with you that world considers us "Cowards" on military front. It encourages terrorists to harm our country because they know that India will never retaliate... They will let few of the lower level people get arrested and the case will be closed. I can not agree with you more.

Hello msdivkar, I read this column on today's news papers. Afridi was mainly unhappy with their home minister and Gautam Gambhir. And said the pakistani people are more large hearted than many other Indians. Actualy I did not take this so seriously and to some extent he was right. the home minister's comment on match fixing was a funny comment and that Gambhir in my view should not have said that the cup would be dedicated to those killed in the Mumbai attack. Gambhir and most other news channel sees or think Mumbai is the whole India. They do not see the aggression of the Chinese force on the border and are plotting to capture Arunachal Pradesh. The way earlier Pakistani players would sledge India this team is very polite indeed. We have to see the positive things also.

Hi Rajiv, Be sure that the politicians and media people ignore the Chinese aggression on purpose. As much as I read about the building spree of the Chinese (roads and dams and other infrastructure) in my local newspaper, I think the Indian Army is very clear about this and they send all that knowledge and intelligence reports to Delhi but somehow I feel India is still not decided as to how to react / interact with the Chinese. Its always been an old malady of our establishment to brush issues under the carpet (same with Pakistan, POK, Kashmir etc) and they are just ignoring Chinese aggression (wishing it away somehow) till its just too late!!! Sometimes back, I was heartened to hear that the present govt is giving NE its due importance in building infrastructure and connecting with the people… after all, I always accept that the people of NE have forever been ignored in favour of the mainland…. However, as far as Gambhir is concerned, I think it was a very emotional and on the moment comment of his. Though terrorist attacks and bomb blasts have affected almost every part of this country, the Mumbai attacks was certainly different in its aggression, ferocity, temerity, intensity and directness. All this while, Pakistan was actually beating behind the bush and indirectly sponsoring terrorists but here we had Pakistani people actually crossing over and starting this mayhem…this was nothing short of a direct war and the people killed are definitely war heroes to us…so I think Gambhir was within his emotional rights to dedicate the WC victory to the Mumbai heroes!

First of all, I think we attach too much importance to what Pakistan says or does, much to our own detriment. We talk more and act less and this has only emboldened them further over the years. While I respect Afridi’s gestures on the way he spoke at Mohali, we are also at liberty to remember our martyrs and dedicate this historic win to them in that very city Mumbai. Secondly, the very fact that we’ve tolerated Pakistani terrorism for so long and gone on again and again to build bridges with them, shows to everybody whether we’re large hearted or not and we don’t need to clarify that to Afridi. Thirdly, I think several Pakistani cricketers are very keen to participate in IPL coz of the money, hence maybe Afridi is indeed trying to build bridges, at least for Pakistani cricketers.

Afridi completely misunderstood Gambhir. He might understood Indians before he talk. Indians are very smooth. Indians feel pain even for small stimulant. He must understood and talk again. he should not raise religion feelings over pakistan without knowing soul of Indians

Whatever he says now but that was a pretty stupid statement by Afridi which he made earlier.I call it stupid because why did he made comment on Gambhir's statement. All Gambhir said was that this win is dedicated to victims of Mumbai attack, so whats wrong in it, Gambhir didnt even mentioned anything related to Pakistan and this is a free world ,Gambhir can dedicate this win to anything and anyone till he does not quote anything wrong against any race or country.Although i am not surprised about him giving anti Indian statement , they have been doing it since they came to Mohali.I am sure he was under the pressure of some extremist group in Pakistan to change his old statement in which he said some nice things about India.

Well said. Afridi is indeed wrong in making that statement and he must have realized it later. There is also a possibility, as you say, that he may be under pressure from some sector to change his earlier stance towards India. Afridi felt the impact of Gambhir's remark because every Pakistani is feeling guilty of Mumbai attack.
