Holy week is just around the corner. And we Catholics have to do a little sacrifice which is fasting and abstinence. But I doubt if this tradition is being followed nowadays...Do you?

What we traditionally do is that in the beginning of Ash Wednesday we do not eat meat. It is then we sacrifice something that we enjoy and give it up for the entire 40 days. Each Friday after Ash Wednesday we do not eat meat. We attend Mass on Ash Wednesday and our regular Sunday Mass. Thereafter, each Friday we do not eat meat. Then on Holy Saturday, we attend Mass again with Easter offerings such as bread and Easter baskets for blessings. Sunday after mass we feast on Meat in which we celebrate with family which on this day it is Easter Sunday. Each Catholic celebrates it a bit differently but similar in some ways. This is how our family has done it for as long as my teachings can remember.

It's nice to know that this tradition is very intact in your family. My family we're like that when I was in my younger years.

Hi, whengcat....I think the amount of sacrifice that is done is dependent upon how much of a Catholic each individual is. As in most all religions there are going to be those who follow the teachings to the letter and then there are those who won't.

Hello, Yeah, you're right and sad to say, I must admit that I'm one of the later part of those you mentioned. But with sincerity in my heart, I know God will understand me.

For the past Fridays i have been trying to eat fish as viand , as what tradition tells Catholics during this Lent Season. However, i always forget that it is Friday for the past two weeks, so i ordered our utility man to buy me meat as viand. So when lunchtime came my office mates would notify me of my inadvertence. But what can i do, i already bought the food? I just joked maybe God will forgive me because i am getting older so i am already forgetful. So, when i get home i would pray for forgiveness from God for having forgotten it. But today, i really remembered since last night, that i shall eat fish. Lo! i did !

Your right! i think it also. Nowadays the tradition of the roman catholic fade when it come from food, specially in Filipinos. Filipino knowns as food lover thats way it is hard for them to do that sacrifice. Me, im thinking of that tradition. And i am willing to sacrifice for almost a week. It just a week, so why don't we give that for our almighty savior, right?
