Hi. asliah. I can't control myself from crying at all either. Even when my eyes start to water, I am unable to wipe my eyes. I usually just turn and walk in another direction while I am cutting up onions. If this does not help, I will open up the freezer so that the cold air can help to relieve the burning sensation that is into my eyes. The only way that we can avoid to keep from crying would be to, run the onion under cold water as you are slicing onions. You can use an onion cutter. Or if it is possible, to close your eyes while you are cutting up an onion, this will help, but it is impossible, because you need to have them opened while you are slicing up the onions.

I learned something new today. It makes total sense to open the freezer and let the eyes sooth. Thanks you cream, I will do just this next time my eyes are affected while cutting onions.

I will peel the onion under cold running water and find that while I am slicing it I do not tear anymore. Sometimes depending on the size of the onion I may run it again under cold water in between 2 - 3 slices.

This is the same thing that I do too, hardworkinggurl! It does help to run the onions under cold water.

This is why I hate having to cut onions. What happens is that my eyes get misty, start stinging and tears just start rolling down. I can never control this, I don't know anybody who can. It amazes me how something so simple as an onion can somehow form tears.

First, make sure the room is well ventilated. Put an electric fan behind you so that the vapor from the onion can be blown away from you. Use a sharp knife, it helps a lot. Try to keep yourself as far as you can from the onion. If you only need to slice the onion, cut it under water. Do not open your eyes wide, try to close them as far as you can. That is all that I can think of. Happy choppy away.

I always end up crying to the point I can't see me cutting it when I cut an onion so I try to use minced onion in it's place. If we absolutely have to use a real onion... it's usually a dish my husband is making and i'll let him suffer it out while I enjoy it from another room. lol

I don't like onions, but I have cut them up before. Try chewing on a piece of bread while slicing, but it doesn't always work. Do a search online, I'm sure you'll find more information.

YES..it is a tearful job...BUT I keep my onions in the "veggie cooler" of my fridge...and put my knife in the freezer for a couple of minutes before slicing. If I have just bought the onions, I put them in the freezer for about 10 minutes before slicing or chopping. The cold seems to help dissuade the fumes that make your eyes water!

I would say if you could do something to cover your nose while slicing the onion, I think the smell of it is what brings the tears to our eyes. My only other suggestion is to try to mask the smell with another smell such as a lit candle while slicing, or using a fan etc to get the smell away from you. Of course I am sure a lot more people will have better ideas as well.

When I would slice an onion, I always sharpen the knives that I would use for slicing onions. With sharp knife, I will not cry when slicing onions.

It doesn't just make your cry, the smell even stays too long on your hands even if you wash it hard with a good smelling soap. I was told that when cutting onions, one has to wash it first so it won't make you cry. It does work sometimes but sometimes I still could cry a little even after washing it before cutting.

Try putting a bowl of water beside you when you peel and dice onions. From time to time, dip your knife to the bowl of water to rinse the knife and take away the onion juice from it. Also, after peeling the onions put them in a bowl with water before dicing them, it relieves me somehow.

After peeling off the skin, wash it with running water. Don't rub your eyes with your hands while slicing onions.

it's normal especially when they're the most purple ones. what makes you cry is that tangy scent wafts up to our noses, and our eyes begin to water. Sometimes, the onion reaction is just a mild ocular irritant; other times, it's a full-on cry fest. When you cut an onion, you break cells, releasing their contents. Amino acid sulfoxides form sulfenic acids. Enzymes that were kept separate now are free to mix with the sulfenic acids to produce propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sulfur compound that wafts upward toward your eyes. This gas reacts with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulating your eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away. Pearly white onions are chock-full of vitamins C, B1 and B6, along with a healthy dose of potassium, phosphorus and fiber. Though onions aren't universally appealing to the human palate, they have the potential to lower bad cholesterol, relieve hypertension and minimize blood clotting [source: McNamee].

I am really glad that I am not the only one who cries around onions. And I don't have to be slicing them. I know when someone is slicing onions in the house. My eyes start to well up and then the tears start flowing. Its rather funny, I've got a lot of sensitivity towards onions. Therefore, I am going to really be irritated around them and I try to go outside for a while, until they are done being cut and they are put away. As for any way to get away from that. I don't know. I think that splashing cold water in your eyes might work. I think I heard that someway. However, I never really cut onions all that often. Only a handful of times because I hate being around them so much. Therefore, I really have no idea if that is going to really work. Still there are a lot of times where cold water is going to really be the think to help a lot of the time.

I used to cry a lot too when chopping some onions. I read some of the response in your discussion and I see many good ideas to reduce the effect of the onions to our eyes. I think I gonna try those ideas. Anyway, nice post. :)

onions are really tearful... its because of the acids which get released when you cut them.. people say when you cry more it means your eyesight is good... but anyways if you want to avoid crying... just wash it after cutting once with cold water... thats it and you are done!
