Things to do this summer with the kids

Hello mylotters,
The summer is approaching and I was wondering if anyone have any suggestions on where's a fun place to take the kids and that's not too expensive. I would really like to hear about the place you've actually been and what was your experience while you were there.

No doubt about it, the swimming pool is the best place for kids to have fun during the searing heat.
For educational tours, I bring the children either to the museum or the zoo.
When I have no money for such grand plans, I take the kids on a picnic at a park, bring a frisbee, a volleyball or badminton, have some ice cream from the vendor, and whamm, we are all happy.
