An Askal

What is an askal? Is it a new breed? Is it a pet? What kind of pet? An askal is a dog in streets commonly named by Filipinos to stray dogs. It used to be "asong kalye" and has been coined askal for short. But I truly wonder if my fellow countrymen realize that these breed has indeed been taken for granted. Not to mention the rich and the powerful in display of their status would rather prefer a breed of pedigree than that of their own. I have nothing against the best of bred dogs but I would like to instill to the reader is the urgent fact that there are askals capable of love much greater than that of a well-bred dog. Instead, we neglect the rising issues of askals/stray dogs feasted upon drunken men for their mere "pulutan" during a drinking session. How I despise the sight of lowly men. I have 3 aksals and I have always Indebted my life to them. One time, My brother after cooking his viand has left the gasoline range turned on. In a matter of seconds our askals kept on barking and would stop calling our attention until I had asked them whats wrong then the eldest dog led me through the kitchen and kept turning around the gasoline range as if pointing to me that it smells only to find out it was turned on the whole time. I hope dear bloggers that my story would simply raise an awareness that we have a hero in each dog whether its pure breed, mixed or misunderstood like the askals.

hahaaha, will definitely your opinion is a news worthy, infact when I was in pre-school i got what you call now as "aspin" yes, I witnessed some of them become the pulutan of some by standers in our neighborhood before but now no one would actually and openly do such cruel thing anymore.

Thank you for the response..and I have to agree.. Filipino's are becoming aware of animal cruelty and P.A.W.S is taking steps to become active nationwide. So proud! ;)

graz, I believe that the word askal had been changed to aspin. That is how the Philippine dogs are now known. And the aspin is a local breed, perceived to have intelligence that could really help their masters, just like in the anecdote you related. Many of my neighbors have aspin for pets. Mine is mixed breed but looks like aspin to me, too.
