Stock photography?

Hi guys, I have been working as an article writer for almost half a year now, but finally things are picking up in the payment department! Soon my income will allOw me to purchase my own DSLR, which i plan to use for general and stock photography. My question is, is stock or general photography still a business where a novice can earn a decent sum? I mean istock and the like have heaps of prOs who would outshine me, but even 100$ a month Would be beneficial. Any ideas? Suggestions? For sites and tips to imprOve? Much appreciated. For those who are curious i plan to get a Nikon D5100 soon!
