...what's that number below a category?

It has been a mystery to me when I surf around mylot for future interests. When I do get around, I noticed that is a number below each category or interests. Can anybody tell what it signifies or it's importance? I keep wondering if it was the number of discussion posts or number of members who subscribe to that interests. Any info will be welcome.
