Do you let your children watch TV?

I'm 17 years old, but I have a 1 year old sister and I just recently found out that while I'm in school, my grandma has been turning on the TV for her to watch all day while my baby sister is in the crib. I have taken so much preventative measures from hiding all the DVD's and taking the card out of the DirectTV slot. The worst part is my uncle watches action movies that involved guns, blood, knives, etc. I'm not her mom, but I feel like she's my child instead of a sister. My mom doesn't really give all the attention my baby sister wants so I'm always there for her. What do you do to limit TV time for your kids?

Hi,first, i think your family members should try to attach importance to this question. You know, for small kids, we should try to refrain from letting them to watch TV. Some grandparents like watching TV and taking care of their grandchildren at the same time. Maybe they lack of knowledge about the bad effect TV on kids. It does not only involve radiation, but also bad effect on kids' eyes. As you have said, your uncle often watch some TV program that is not suitable for small kids. You should let your mother know it and have good talks with your other family members. You are right, though you are not her mother, but her older sister, i think you should do something for her good.

I hate to say this but having enough responsible people around who cares for your sister and instructions is the only way there is. Leaving her in a day care center is an option but I don't think they would accept a one year old child under their care. Besides, your sister is just one year old so the entire family should be responsible for her welfare. She's lucky that she has you for a sister :-)

Yeah, I begged my mom to let someone else properly take care of her but she doesn't want to spend the extra $$$ for it. I think she's lucky too.. I wish I had a older sister!

Hi amourhelen, actually i don't have kids, but i'm having younger cousins, so i don't completely put off the tv all the time, but i don't allow them to watch few shows, if i feel the tv show doesn't make any harm to them or the way they think, then i allow them to watch, or else i put a red face, and they get afraid.

We allow our children to watch tv for a certain period in the evening. Previously, they have addicted to television, watching cartoon network, pogo etc., Even they have neglected their studies being addicted to tv. That is why we have imposed restrictions on them. We strictly instructed them to watch tv for 1 hour only in the evening after only completing their home work.

I do let my children watch TV. However, I do have a say in what and how long they watch. The TV is not a baby-sitter and should not be used for one.

My teenage son likes to watch a limited number of programes and many of these are helpful for his studies. For example the programs about history and science. I let my disabled son and my daughter watch a little bit of television but they enjoy books even more. The worst thing that you mention is that your uncle watches action movies with content that sounds like it is for 18 years old and older. It is not a children's program at all and is very bad viewing for your 1 year old baby sister. In my home country there is a children's television channel for pre-school children. All the things on it are suitable for 1 to 5 year olds. My younger kids go to bed at 7pm. In the evening I go on my laptop and don't watch television unless it is something I want to see a lot.

Perhaps I am not so interested in watching TV today since I have been busy already. So my child is not so keen on watching TV, too. But I still will give him some good cartoons to watch. He also likes to watch the weather forecast, something relates to science and America's Funniest Home Videos. It is good to watch this and it won't spend a long time. But in your situation, I think it is so harmful for your sister to watch TV all day long. It is not only harmful for the eysight, but also affects the growth of children. Children needs to play, to read, to do some activities rather than being a potato couch. They can't learn how to think and they can't develop their body. In a long term, it is bad for the children. Especially it is so bad for the children to be addicted to TV. I love China

It's very nice of you to be caring enough about your little sis ,I think it's not that bad for a kid to watch some stuff on TV ,but besides that little baby does need some extra stuff ,like playing with 'em ...Still tons of more things to figure out to raise a kid .

Hi Amourhelen, Sometimes its tough to restrict kids watching tv. But if we start at small age, they can set. Moreover kids should have more physical activity. I always take them out to playground for them to play thereby they can limit watching tv. I also make them watch news and science related ones which they also find interesting.

Yes I do agree that we should limit the children specially ages 2-6. Because this is the stage where their mind is absorbing really fast. I have a daughter she watches Tv almost everyday too. She could easily imitate what the show is doing like fighting, slapping faces and etc and even learn to laugh when she see kissing scenes. It is our responsibility to protect them to keep them from watching barbaric movies. We should guide them on what movies to watch only.

It's really not a problem if they watch TV. As long as they can still attend to the baby , then it's fine. Anyway, it would be nice if you get to talk with your mother that they could watch TV as long as they are not violent ones but entertaining ones, like cartoon network or disney channel. My child when she was still a kid is so fond of watching cartoon network. Before we knew it, she was speaking English already !

Since you cannot watch your baby sister 24 hours a day, it would be best to talk to your family members. This will be for the good of you sister and your grandmother, uncle and especially your mom should be aware of your concerns.
