I'm sorry for what happened to you, but it looks more like a malfunction of your computer than a HP problem. I've had an HP for two years and - even though I prefer Acer - I have never experienced any problem. The only annoying things are automatic updates, but after disabling that feature I was fine.

Based on SquareTrade research of The Most Reliable Laptops, HP gets the last rank or should I say HP gets 9th Rank from 9 Laptops with 25% chance failure in second years. Although HP gets bad rank in reliability, yet HP gets the highest rank in their sold products. I think it's kind of ironic.

I have had my dv9870eb for almost 3 years now and never has it failed on me except for that one time when the motherboard kind of melted, but I just brought it back to the store and they fixed it under guarantee and never had any problems till now.

This is more of a weird outcome, I do not know of the place you bought it but is it reliable? I have always used and favored hps and I have had them for awhile with no problems and great work that I can also customize.
