Rooting My Android Phone- Galaxy S

First of all, it depends on what you're wanting to do. However if you don't know what you're doing don't. It's not wise to try to root your phone if you aren't sure of what you're doing. If done right it won't hurt your phone, done wrong however. It can crash your phone rendering it completely usless. My advise would be stick with the Usb and only conect directly to your computer. try not to do anything too complex, unless you can find step-by-step instruction.
