Why people call New York a Big Apple?

Why people call new york the big apple?this made me think,im just new here in new york and it made me think why big apple?it is because its a big country? or is it because a lot more of apples growing here in new yokr?Can somebody help me understand why ?i will really appreciate your comments.thank you.:)

I didn't know the answer to it so I did a search in Wikipedia and I recommend that you also do one. They say that the term was first heard in 1921.
