my dog keeps on eating poop! how do I get rid of that disgusting habit? Thanx :)

my dog keeps on eating poop! she is almost 5 years old and has been doing this forever!!! generally she is a great dog, but once she sees poop, nothing can stop her. I was wandering if you have any ideas how to fix this and make me a much happier dog owner. thanx!!

our dog once did that (she is in heaven now.. well not due to eating her waste!).. she was a puppy then but she got over it when she was like a year old or two. sometimes this is a habit that can be outgrown, but since your dog is now 5 years old it means she is already an adult and this can be alarming - you should see your vet regarding this because she may have some underlying issues.
possible reasons she is eating poop:
1. she just wants your attention. please bear in mind to not yell at her or traumatize her in other way. :) be gentle on reprimanding her.
2. she may be under stress or has anxiety
3. health problems that include pancreatitis, intestinal infection, food allergies
4. she may be needing more nutrients in her food. just be sure that she gets enough of them
it is still best to seek your vet's help as he might have some ways to control this issue. make sure that the environment your dog is living in neat and tidy so that she won't have these urges and to keep her mind off from eating poop.

Our beagle does this. I have disowned her.
I'd like to have her put down or rehomed. Its a disgusting habit; no one is gonna convince me that its normal to eat yer own crap. That is not right. My wife says she's keeping her, and our other dog; but i now want nothing to do with either of them. I wont feed them even if theres no one else in to do it, i wont clean up after her, i wont walk them anymore. I just wanted a lovely little dog that i could walk often; instead i have a disgusting little rat.
Copro nil is a con; it doesnt work at all. She still eats it; she even eats my other dogs crap. I am pissed off that i have spent over £60 on this and it hasnt worked. What does?? I dont believe anything will. Dogs are scavengers and should NOT be pets. shoot them all.

I don't know what kind of dog you have, but we had a White German Shepherd who did this and at first the vet would say she'd out grow it and she didn't..Then the vet suggests that she had this digestive disorder and we came to the conclusion she ate her poop to help her digest her food. There are enzymes for dogs with this disorder, but it is expensive, so we had to get rid of her..
So if your dog has this disorder the only options are to deal with it or invest in these monthly enzymes..

Surely, the dog would automatically be sick? We have goldfish which do that but it automatically spits it out afterwards because it tastes strange and against their natural instinct. With all living things I'm sure that if you consume your own waste it is virtually impossible. Or else you will have to do take your dog to the vet just to check that it's okay and doesn't have any health problems or perception problems, for example her brain is giving her the wrong signals when she eats the wrong foods. Hope this helps.
