I have an HP Compaq 2230s and lately it always shuts down when it gets hot. I know shutting down is normal every time my unit gets so hot. This problem prevents me from doing things i used to do like watching movies, listening to music, and playing games. Can someone help me regarding this problem? (discussions...suggestions)

check if the fans are working well. If not get them repaired. Use a cool pad, it provide some cool to your laptop . Also check the processor fan. It may be a major problem.

Well, I've just checked your HP Compaq 2230s and it has a Core2Duo processor so that is one cause out of the way as that family of CPUs use much less power than previous models and therefore produce less heat. Check out the good ideas above but the main problem is probably dirt blocking the CPU cooling fins. I have seen some coolers totally blocked with dust and the cooling fan is working ok but unable to move the cooling air over the ally fins. You need to get someone to dismantle the laptop and check.

If you have no technical knowledge, you really cannot do much except bring it to a qualified technician. If you know a couple of things and you are good with the screwdriver, you can attempt to start unscrewing the screws at bottom and slowly open it up. Inside you can use some air spray to remove dust around the CPU area and of course clean the heatsinks wherever you see those. If the laptop is still in warranty period do not even think about opening it up. I hope you find the way to solve the problem. Have a nice day!

For some reason a long time ago when i had an older model laptop, the fan would always get hot on the bottom if it got blocked in any way. And when i say hot i mean HOT, to the point where touching it was not a good option. I'm glad they have upgraded since then and have put the fan in i guess you could say a more practical place. hope that your computer problems get worked out soon, best of luck.

Yes use a air hose and send a stream of air into the cooling vents. there is probably dust in your fans causing them to malfunction. you should thank god for this shutoff mechanism because it is the only thing preventing any serious damage from occuring to your computer
