What a mess

Hello everyone, Some of you may remember that a while back, I posted a discussion in which I stated that I was faced with a choice in which no matter what I decided to do, someone was gonna get hurt. For privacy reasons, I can't go into the situation which put me in that position, but I can say that even though I didn't go about things in the best way, I made the only choice I felt I could make under the circumstances. As expected though, the consequences for me have been enormous from an emotional standpoint, as I am facing much backlash for my choice. While this was something I fully expected, it's still very painful for me to go through. I so wish I could've handled things differently, but if I would have gone the other way, I would not have been able to look myself in the eye. So my question to you all is this: If any of you have ever been in this position, what gave you the courage to stick to what you knew to be the right thing even though it was painful to do?
