I notice if I don't have chinese once a week and then have leftovers, I crave this type of food. I am wondering if its the the flavor we cannot duplicate when trying to cook it ourselves or? Maybe since I love rice and noodles that is another reason I like chinese food. I prefer to go to a chinese and get take out over eating a hamburger and fries at a fast food restaurant. I am wondering if it is healthier to eat it than other foods?

yep, I love chinese food, I just had it last nite! We just got sweet an sour chicken, egg rolls and rice last night but we usually get lots more. Healthy or not it is delicious and it doesn't make you feel so full and heavy.

For sure KingLobster. As you age everything is bad to eat so they say! I notice too that I never feel heavy when eating chinese. Maybe thats another reason I like eating it. However I notice I get hungry sooner after eating chinese over a meal I have made. King if you like soy sauce, try cutting up white or red potoes. add a onion and fresh mushrooms if you have them. Place in a oven dish sprinkle soy sauce lightly over vegetables and add about half a stick of margarine or butter. Bake in oven for about 45 minutes til potatoes are done covered on 425. Bet you will like this veggie dish since you like soy sauce!

You make a good point here about feeling full and heavy. I have noticed this as well. It does seem like this type of food does weigh on you a lot less. I have noticed that I feel dried out though from the sodium overload. I probably just need to make smarter choices on the soy sauce. However, I know that I most likely will not. I suppose its a good thing that I am still young. :)

Great suggestion! I will certainly have to look into how I can start using soy sauce more productively. I really appreciate your comment.

As far as whether it is healthier to eat than other foods, I think it depends on how it is prepared. Unfortunately, most Chinese food available in America is Americanized and not prepared the way it is prepared in China. I know that I can't stand sweet and sour that is available in America, but when I was living in China, the food was a lot different than you can even get in an "authentic" Chinese restaurant. My sister-in-law is from Taiwan and her cooking is a lot better than any restaurant I have been to. Of course, I have also been to places in China where too much oil was used and I didn't consider those foods to be healthy but most foods I ate there were prepared in a healthy manner which is more than I can say for most fast foods in America.

Not sure differences in Chinese and Vietnamese foods but I ate stuff in Vietnam I never have seen again LOL We also have thai restaurants here I hear they contain a lot more spice than chinese or japanese foods. I bet your sister in laws food is good! Authentic. I notice when I see Chinese people eating chinese food it is not what they are selling either. guess we are getting Americanese LOL

Right. I know when I was visiting Thailand that I had to ask them not to put the spices on because I don't like really spicy food. Fortunately people there are really accommodating of foreigners. Her food is good. She cooks really hot and with very little oil. My brother commented on the same thing when they would go to Chinese restaurants. I guess when they come over here and start businesses they think that people here have different tastes than what they had back home. I think sometimes it is hard for them to find all the products that are readily available in China and it is cheaper to use American methods, but I don't really know.

Sounds like my hubby only he don't get to ask. I will have it home before he gets home LOL. We have a Japanese place in the mall that makes chicken teriaki I like that too. Doesn't seem to be as sweet as the chinese foods.

I dun know if they are healthier too. Since you avoid the sodium drenched ones, the deep fried ones tend to be fried in lard which is full of bad cholestorol. I saw on TV a local medical program featured a female patient who has heart attacks more than once. You wouldnt believe it if you see her, she is as skinny as a model. Her doctors advice, for her condition, she has to avoid pork altogether. But besides the pork and the lard, I notice that Chinese dishes has a lot clear soups. That is a plus plus point. In my own culture, dishes contain a lot of oil. If there is a need to saute, we like to use plenty of oil. A minus minus point in my view. On the whole take moderate amount of every foods. That is always safe.

I always get cravings for chinese food too ! I try to eat out like once a week and chinese is usually my choice. I doubt it's healthier than hamburgers and pizza but at least there is a fair amount on vegetables on the side of your order when you get chinese opposed to regular fast food. Even if it's drenched in soy sauce, it's one of my favorite foods :)

Although I share similar cravings for Chinese food, I seriously doubt that it is any bit healthier than hamburgers at all. The high sodium content in Chinese food is enough to make this food highly unhealthy. Despite this, it can certainly be said that this is one of the best types of foods to have leftovers of. It is also something that is a little bit different than the tastes that we are used to. I feel like this may be a big factor as to why we crave this kind of food so much.

I tend to stay away from the soy based sodium drenched chinese. I do eat a lot of the chinese rice. And I love the sweet and sour chicken and orange chicken. My other love is the egg drop soup and crab ragoons and last but not least egg rolls LOL I have a lot of restaurants in the area I live in being a tourist town but my car still drives to the chinese restaurant LOL thanks for responding!

That is great that you are able to stay away from the foods that have a lot of sodium in them. I am not afraid to admit that I do not have the same level of willpower. I would love to be able to enjoy Chinese food without having to think about how unhealthy it is, but I like to dump the soy sauce on it.

I never or rarely get to have Asian food of any kind these days but I can make my own. I use basic ingredients as required and one special ingredient: a pouch of concentrated sauce mix. The brand is Lee Kum Kee. I know we are in different countries but I have a feeling that this company is big enough to be in your country too. The flavours are superb and the closest by a long way to that authentic Asian flavour that I have ever found. The flavours can be used with chicken, pork, lamb, beef and prawns. My favourite is the lemon chicken. If you cannot find the pouches in your supermarket Asian section then look up the web site and try and find who stocks their products. If you can track them down, you will be thrilled with them like I am. Good luck.

Chinese Food - Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet
Chinese food do taste good. I wonder what could really be the secret to this. Last night my son treated me and my his Dad to a Chinese Restaurant we did enjoy the food as always. I love the sweet and sour fish fillet. I can't really imagine how they could make the sweet and sour combination as perfect as that. Hmmm, my mouth is watering just by mere mention of this. I took picture of that stuff and here I would like to share.

You are quite right.Chinese food really is healthy, because in Chinese dishes meat is usually served with vegetable and the way those dishes are done is quite different, instead of frying and roasting, most Chinese food are stewed or boiled, and they contain lower calorie.
