Why do people look up when they pray?

I was just watching a TV show and the guy was praying that his baby would be ok and he looked up. I just wondered about that. But I have also seen people in church look down when they pray. I'm not religious but I do pray. I never look up or down. I don't believe God is in the sky. Do you look up or down when you pray? Is there a reason for that?

People look up when they pray because they believe that God is bigger than them. this is like when you are talking to someone taller than you everytime you talk to him/her you look up, Simply because he/she was taller than you. The same thing in praying, they are communicating with God. My dad describe me that God is bigger than us. he said we're like an ants in the sight of God. I believe why others kneel down and look down because they want to show humbleness to God. Depends on what you want to show sincerity to God.

I think it's just habit. We are told God is "up there" so we look up. I know what you mean though..lol I thought about this and realized the people on the other side of the world are looking a different direction than I am. Also kneeling in Church, one looks up to an altar.

Better to have one of those postures than nothing at all, meaning no prayer made for God. Wherever your're looking, your posture, situation, the most important of all is you have time for your God.

Hi, I was included in the livelihood of a prayer, whatever the assumption of others, but praying is a very helpful thing for me emotionally. Indeed there are some religions that believe that God is in heaven (but I've never heard of a God in the ground), I do not believe in God like that. I just believe that God is almighty, the earth is like a speck of dust to Him.

When you heard something and then followed up by teaching maybe from the old ones, then you did it, it became a practice then a habit. Your right in your own belief that God is not in the sky, your partly right but I want to share to you that God is Omnipresent, meaning He could be at any place at any time. The posture of prayer looking up, that means pleading to someone. When other prayed with bowed heads, meaning he humbled himself before the one he thinks greater than him. The most important is, you have time to pray whatever you position maybe, you pray to God, your Creator.
