Have you seen the Jamie Oliver show about eating healthier in schools?

America is a great country but I think there is always room for improvement! If I had children still in school I wouldn't want my children to eat what they serve in school! This man has set some schools in his country to eating healthier and the cost didn't rise. This man is trying to help our schools to fix healthier choices of food. If I had children in school I would stand up and demand better food for my children. Or I would make them healthy food to take to school with them. Do you have children in school? Do you want them to eat healthier? Do you know what is going into the food in your school cafeteria?

I don't know who Jamie Oliver is, but considering what is going into food then FDA says is okay, I wouldn't be surprised that bad things are also in our children's food at school...It is getting to the point where I am going to buy as raw as possible and grow what I can in the growing season..That way I can pack my son's lunch and know he is gfetting real food and not chemicals or anything he should not be eating..

Thanks Stine for the site. I didn't know the extent what he was doing. I did she one of his shows that taught a whole family how to cook healthy. He brought in a years worth of what the family was eating and put it on their table and it made them all sick to see what they ate wasn't healthy. And they all learned to cook healthy. Hi Carmelanirel. He does try to teach the American schools how to cook healthy foods. He showed one show about this school and what they served, I was amased frozen chicken nuggets taste good but not really healthy food. There wasn't really any vegetables on any of the menus mac and cheese taste good but not really healthy. Instant mashed potatoes did you ever read what was in thos instant mashed potatoes? Not a good thing to serve children.

Oh, I can only imagine, and even buying fresh fruits and veggies, unless it is from a reputable company that grows organic, are scary..The only time my son eats a cucumber with the skin on it, (cucumber is his favorite raw veggie)is when I grow it myself. Have you ever picked up a cucumber and feel the wax on it? Gross...:P

I had watched various episodes of this series, when he was trying to change the type of food on schools of UK. I was shocked to see that a lot of kids didn't even knew how a vegetable look like and that there was a few kids that never eat them. Also, the food served on the schools were disgusting, but the childrens prefer to eat the fake food than the meals cooked by Jamie Oliver (I wish I was at that school). But if you see, the main reason for the kids be like that is because of their parents. Usually parents eat bad and they don't cook healthy meal at home. That way, kids will never know how good fruits and vegetables can be.

Hi Moneywinner and Marcmm and welcome to my lot. Thank God I had a mother that cooked really healthy food. You both are right it all boils down to the parents not teaching their children to eat healthy food from the beginning. Heck you can make vegies taste great with a little imagination. I don't eat turnips because I never had them made any way that I like them. But I do eat the turnip greens which are really a great source for iron.

I've never watch that episode. But who are they to blame. Blame their parents for not teach their kids about it. I won't surprise if they don't know food really look like before it was cook. You are right. parents make the bad example by eating unhealthy themself. It is a common sight now a whole family are obese. from the grandparents to their grandchildren just because their unhealthy eating habit.

freeman, You're lucky there. Have you seen a reality TV show about fat teen, I think the name of the show are Fat Camp. The parent are concern for their obese children and really want the best for them. But when I see their parents, their parents are very much obese. They didn't shows a very good example for their kids. And then they cry because their children are unhealthy. Then I have watch this show at MTV, I used To Be Fat. The mother pampered her daughter very much and she always give her daughter to eat so she will be happy. In the end her daughter very well obese. Sometimes the parents didn't see that they are their main problem why their children are obese.

Here the school provides rice, meats and vegetables for the lunch. So I think it is healthy, but it won't taste very good.

It sounds healthy too bad they don't make it taste good though. It is sad if they make it taste good then our children will eat them without thinking about the taste. That is what I like about Jamie Oliver he makes good food taste good and it is good for you at the same time.

Hi Youless. He has been on a mission to help get American schools to make healthier foods for our children. I think being a parent it is our job to help get our children eating healthy. Heck I love fresh vegies and home cooking. I am just trying to get parents to at least look at how their children are eating in the schools. In China do they feed their children healthy foods in the schools?

Yes i have a five year old son who is just starting school. I am going through the headache now of finding food that is allowed at the school as everything in Australian schools is healthy these days although it wasn't when i went to school. I know in Australia they only let you send your child with fresh fruit and vegtables, tinned or canned fruit and vegtables or sliced meat. No chocolate, lollies, biscuits or cordial allowed in the school grounds at all. Or peanuts. It's hard finding lunch box ideas my son will try though, as autistic children are hard to persude to try new things. He doesn't eat alot at school but it's always healthy.

Hi Don't_pick_your_nose I like your name on here it is funny. It is a good thing that your schools serve healthy foods. I know it must be hard with an autistic child. I will keep you and your child in my prayers. It is a good thing that some things are not allowed on school grounds but I think it is wrong if a child is allowed to eat some things at home like peanuts then they shouldn't be told they can't bring peanuts to school.

I do not have kids, so I don't have much knowledge about school cafeteria and school food quality. What I have been hearing about food in school cafeteria has been mixed and it seems to be an ongoing struggle. I can see that in his show. I watched it a little. In my opinion, there are few factors: - Somehow, some school officials don't think highly about providing healthy food. They may be too concerned about costs and other hassles. - There seems to be perception that it will cost lots more money to serve healthier food. What schools need are smart people that can come up with healthy ideas. Of course they are some others that I don't feel comfortable judging. I would be curious how private schools serve their food or has it been just public schools' issues.

Hi Garson and welcome to my lot. I don't know how it is in the private schools but bet it is a lot better then it is in the public. If I had a child and they were in a private school they had better be getting the best food or I would take my child to a school that would get the best foods. It makes me sick to see what they are serving the children in the schools and then they wonder why our children are obese! Parents should be making these schools feed our children a lot better. If I still had children living at home and going to school I would be livid about the food they serve!

I've seen a few episode. And I even see how Jamie Oliver try to change a eating habit of unhealthy lady who want to get pregnant but can't due to her obesity and health condition. Jamie help her eating well and on the show she finally get pregnant. I think how the shows are if I'm not mistaken. In Malaysia, we are not fond to this burger things or cheese things. But we have a lot of fatty foods and fried foods. But mostly this things are just for breakfast and tea break. they don't serve lunch unless it was ordered by students or teacher.

Hi Marcmm. I think that this country America is on a down hill slide for having obese and it is all because parents don't teach their children how to eat healthy. It is also the fault of the schools for not feeding our children healthy. Let's face it chicken nuggets taste good but they have stuff in them that I can't even pronounce...LOL If you can't pronounce it then what is it?

Hi Marcmm. You are so right if it isn't something you know then what is it? I don't want to eat something that has stuff in it I don't recognize either. Maybe the rats didn't die that is so funny but it sounds really close to the truth.

There are a lot of things we see from the ingredients list are not something we know. I don't know why this thing are call food or edible. Maybe when they tested it, rats and human don't die immediately and it is assume this stuff are safe to eat. I heard someone say this. If ou grandparents didn't know the food, then it is not a food.

Hi Ladybug. There is a link to him on this discussion. We need to keep our children healthy and we all need to worry about that. I started this discussion because he is trying to get into the LA schools to help bring our children back to health.

I haven't seen yet but the schools are required to serve healthier foods for all the students and even teachers. In order them to have a good body condition and to get more attentive to class and have a healthier mind to answer questions during examinations.

Hi Jmana02 and welcome to my lot. The schools that I have seen on his shows don't serve healthy food they serve stuff that I wouldn't eat. The LA schools won't let him in their kitchens why I have no reason. But I think it could do with the fact that they might be full of bugs or something they want to hide. My opinion but when I lived in LA long time ago the schools was getting a bad rap then too! So my question is why don't the LA schools let him in to help bring our children back to healthy eating?
