Should I Go Back to College Or Not?

Philippines

I'm 20 yo from Philippines and I have reached 2nd yr in college only. I wasn't able to finish college because of the most common reason - financial. Now I'm working in a stable company for two yrs. I love my job, my salary and benefits is more than enough for me, my colleagues are such a good crowd, an excellent working environment and I'm okay with my boss. But I always remember 2 yrs ago, when I stopped schooling, I told myself, I'll look for a job, save money then send myself back to school to finish college and finally earn my degree. You think I should still go for it or enjoy my present life and forget about college? By the way, I used to be an IT student and my present job is not far from my desired course. Opinions pls. I love to know others point of view.. :)

Hello Xpark, I think that you should go back to college. If your contract has done, do you hope you will find the same job? I am on my second year level now and I am taking BS Math. I know I need to be patient in order for me to finish college and have my degree soon. For all I know that I can only be better and become successful in life if I finished my studies. That's what my parents instilled to me so I will not break that. I wish you all the best. Please inculcate in your mind that you may be okay at this moment of time because you have a job but that's only temporary. Thanks Dennis

Thanks Dennis! Well, I forgot to mention that I'm already a regular employee in a call center but I think you're right. It doesn't matter if I'm a regular employee the thing is my world may not turn the same way it is now. It's just that, I would be spending a lot in my education 'cause I'll be studying in Mapua and they follow a quarter system. I'm afraid after 2 yrs I've been working, my savings are still not enough. I hope I can go back to school without sacrificing my job. :)

Hi Again, Now that you 're a regular employee, you find it hard to be a working student as you must be on the General Shift. My Sister is in Clark doing the same Job as yours. She's a regular employee and getting good salary. After Finishing her degree here in my province, she used to teach and there she had used her education but after realizing that she may get a better fortune with the field she is upto now, she shifted. Anyway, she is a licensed Public Shool Teacher. Why did she shift? I don't know much. For all I know, being a teacher is much more respected and the joy being with her student's exactly is uncomparable. You know, if there's a will, there's a way. You can always go back to Mapua any time at any tri-mestrial you want. Good Luck! Thanks Dennis

I feel anyone who has the opportunity to further their education should do so if they want to. That degree can help you later on get an even higher paying job. You could probably make a 6 figure income with the right degree.

Wow! Finally someone made a different response from others. LOL That's what I was thinking before I talked to my boss and asked an assistance regarding this matter (convinient schedules). He guarantee me that I can have a better shift so I can go back to school and be a working student. Thanks sarahruthbeth22! :)

Well personally I think it should be your choice, and if you can afford to go back to school. Maybe your Boss would help send you back to school as part of an incentive and sometimes a benefit for them to be able to offer help thru the company. In any way this is something you need to decide. If it is close to what you are doing now and would help you earn more than you might consider it, but only if this is something you are ready to tackle yourself.

I'm assuming you're in a call center job right now, right? Well, let me tell you a frustrating story, I know a guy, he's 25 years old now, been on and off in college and still in college now. Didn't finish a single course. He had family and financial problems at first, but later it became personal. Like you, he worked and wanted to save to finish his schooling and get a degree. You see, this guy is now thinking, "what the hell, I'm 25 and I'm nowhere near finishing my course, but I need to because in life the only thing that you'll ever own and can be proud of is your degree.", and then he wonders "what if I get to have my own family and my children asks me what course I have graduated, how will I face them?". You see, this guy was ranked third in the college entrance test of that prestigious university so he never had problems with classes, but eventually he started getting lazy because money came first and studies not really a priority. I am this guy and right now I'm telling you I'm struggling. Given the chance to do it again, I now know I'll do it better for sure. Now, think about this. You're young, don't waste your time on temporary things. You can always go back to having this job you love or surely better when you get you're degree. Time is something that you can't have the luxury of spending and if you spend it without good investment you'll reap back exactly what you sow. Industries today require younger employees with degrees because these are the types that can go far and be competitive anytime, every time. The competition is tight and the race is long, so I suggest you do what is right and get back to getting that degree. Good luck!

Oh.. Hi.. Well looking to today's need I think you should definitely complete your collage .. because you know without degree you won't go far.. think about 5-6 years forward from this time.. see without taking degree you will always be at the same position.. won't get hype n all.. again you can't think of any other opportunities.. If degree is important experience also equally matters.. but I will suggest that kindly go for your degree but if possible go for studies without leaving a job ..if its possible.. because I AM FROM India and here also people are doing part time job and at the same time also continue studies.. because money equally matters... if possible don't leave your job.. but at the same time try to continue your studies.. because in today's world both equally matters experience and degree..

I think that's my edge over those who have recently graduated from college. They don't have experience yet. You're right, competition is tough nowadays. Unemployment and underemployment rate is too high. I hope I can get the chance to study without leaving my job 'cause my savings is not enough to finance myself in the next two years in college.

Hi Xsparky017, Would it be possible to go back to college and still work? You would need to make a living, most likely while attending college, right? You might could go to college part time and work full time. That might be an option. If you are already working in the field that you wanted to work in, I wouldn’t quit that job to go to school, but I would go to school anyway part time. It would take time to get that degree, but it would be soooo worth it! Have a great day!

It would be a great challenge for me to go back to school without quitting on my job. I've searched for so many ways. Even if I managed to go back to school, it would take me up to 5 yrs before I could finish my college bec I will be able to take only few subjects every quarter.

I understand what you are saying. But 5 years will pass anyway whether you go back to college or not. Wouldn't it be worth it to have that degree in 5 years? I say this because many people do distance learning part time and continue to work their jobs and raise their families. You asked and I'm just showing you that you can make use of these next few years and get that degree you want. You don't even have to quit work. Think of all the people who have used online learning to further their careers. You don't have to go to a brick and mortar school. So much is possible now for people who can't stop working but still want to move ahead with their lives.

Well, I am not trying to encourage you to quit your job right now, then go back to school just like that. You can still keep your current job, and I still encourage you to consider finish your school and earn a degree as your back - up plan. Without a degree, in the near future, you might hardly compete with others in the field and in the marketplace. Can you work at the morning, and still take part - time course at night?

Yeah, I think I can. Well, few days after I've posted this discussion, I had a talk with my boss and he told me that he'll help me to have a better schedule so I can go back to school and finish my college. Thanks kingparker! :)

Hi there! We came from the same country. And sadly those that get the upper hand here are those with the college degree. Those that gets the promotion have college degrees. It would really be more advantageous for you if you have that degree. With it and the skill that you have, you most likely will be more successful in your field. I think you can juggle the two as what my other colleagues are doing here too. I am also in the BPO industry. Maybe you can request for a different shift to make way for your studies. It is really difficult to be unemployed nowadays, besides you also need work to finance your studies. It also is hard to find a good company and a job that you really like. Good Luck!

Thanks sweet_pea! After I've posted this discussion, I've received a lot more feedbacks than what I expected. All of you gave me same responses and it served as my awakening from satisfaction in a temporary abundance. I have decided to continue my studies and earn my dream degree. :)

Thank you bhabycatch013! It's true, people are different when they have a bachelor's degree. A different level of confidence and image. It's also my dream to wear a toga and walk on a wide stage, shake hands with the old professors and display my diploma in my bedroom. Good luck to both of us! We can do this! :D

Hi Xparky017 I'm also a college undergrad as you are, I took up BS nursing but one day I had to stop 'coz my parents got ill simultaneously and unfortunately, as a result I had to stop and finished only my third- year. I actually also have the same thinking as you are about finding a good job and to save thousands of pesos so that I could finally finish my degree in the near future but things have changed a lot and my plans seemed dim to achieve , unexpectedly I ended up as a contractual employee, it's really hard when you are living on your own, moreover, Nursing is just too expensive as far as the tuition and school fees are concerned. It's really all up to you friend, because having a college degree is really a great advantage. God bless!

Thanks for sharing asiacevillar! BS Information Technology is an expensive course too and that's also one thing I worry. I don't know if I can finance my education all the way to graduation and receiving my diploma. Graduating and earning my degree is going to be my biggest achievement at an early age of my entire life. It is the only thing I could be proud of when I graduated - that I did not ask anyone to support me instead I was able to reach my most desirable dream all by myself. Good luck to you and God Bless too friend! Let's try our very best to succeed in every way. :)

You have set that goal two years ago,"To find a job and continue your studies",then why not go for it?Now, you have a stable job and can finance your studies at the same time. You may need a college diploma in the future, perhaps to earn a promotion. What if you will lost the job you have now; the competition is so tough that even college graduates are having hard times finding a good job. It's easier for you to find a better if you are a college graduate. If you can't handle your current job while studying at the same time, you can ask your company if they have part-time job and just transfer to it.If they don't have it,just look for a part time job.The point is you need to continue your studies.

Yeah, well we're both in the Philippines and I don't know if you have experienced grabbing a broadsheet newspaper searching the classified add page and see if there's a company who hires someone like you. It's frustrating to realize how few opportunities I have. Thinking back, I could have been like this, I could have been like that if only I was able to finish college at right time.

Hi Xsparky17, Welcome to MyLot! I am also currently taking up B.S Information Technology and I am now a graduating student. We know how I.T Job is in demand today and even a vocational course of I.T which is 2 years will also have a chance to get a better job compared to other courses. However, The importance of finishing bachelor degrees is that you are in an advantage of HIGH paying salary. Numirous studies show that people without a college degree will often make a thousandes of dollars less each year in salary compared to those with a degree. Differences range from $20,000 more for a bachelor degree to $60,000 more for a doctorate and higher. Over the course of a lifetime, this will add up to nearly a million dollars in income difference, Of course, having a degree doesn't guarantee that you'll get the job you want, the EXPERIENCE, PERSONALITY and OVERALL SKILLS SETS are also considered, and hard working people without degrees often succed in some fields. But overall, your chances of economic success, the better. Especially during economic hard times, people without degree are unemployed or underemployed more than people with a college degree. The collge experience is one of the factors. Some employers are less concerned about the actual major studied as much as the degree conferred. In other words, having a college degree shows the prospective employer that you have the experience of making short, medium, and long term goals, working through projects, finding and using resources and assessing your own work. All of these are essential skills in the workplace and a college degree can demonstrate your professionalism and maturity to your employer. An uncompleted degree plan may indicate a lack of motivation or workplace skills. The trade skills. Most obviously, a college education exposes you to the skills needed for many of the highly competitive and rewarding careers. Universities are constantly consulting with major employers to determine what state-of-art skills are needed and modify their curriculum accordingly. The learning experience. Many college graduates take their degree into the office, only to find that their assigned job has less to do with the major, but a college degree indicates that you have the aptitude to learn new concepts. The company's managers figure that because you've taken courses in all kinds of topics, in and out of your field, you can probably handle learning new concepts. Furthermore, employers want to know that they are hiring someone who knows more than just their field, the core curriculum requirements of most universities expose you to liberal arts, social sciences and hard sciences beyond your major field of study like being an I.T professional. The Career Advancement. Partly due to social expectations, sometimes due to certification requirements and occasionaly just because "that's the way it is," some jobs require a college degree, including advanced degrees for PROMOTION. MANAGERIAL JOBS, especially EXECUTIVE JOBS, often require a MASTER'S or DOCTORATE degree. Always remember even how good you are in a company and making enough salary still the disadvantages of not taking a college degree or bachelor degree will always depend on you. I hope it will help you to decide which path you would like to take. May God Bless us

Yeah... I've also experienced that - bargaining the HR for a higher salary on my job offer day. :) Thank God she did not insult me but rather she said, when I'm done with my college, then I can always go back to her office and discuss that matter. :)

Given the same skills and qualifications among job applicants, having a college diploma puts one ahead of others who don't. A college diploma also implies and attests to a graduate's patience, discipline, attitude of mind, ability to work and interact with others (schoolmates and teachers), and a level of articulation/eloquence. If I were in the hiring committee, I would choose one with a diploma over someone without a diploma, GIVEN THE SAME SKILLS, EXPERIENCES, AND QUALIFICATIONS among all job applicants. If one starts one's own company, having a college diploma MAY (?) not be that necessary. To run the company and make a success of it. However, once someone interacts with other industry leaders, civic groups and the government officials, a diploma behind you does not hurt. In other words, a college diploma can help open doors and create options for you. So my answer is an emphatic YES. The network of friends and contacts in college will also be helpful later.

None of the people who have contributed their opinions have said "no" or be "satisfied for what I have". I wonder what's holding me back. I also missed being in a class, participate in a recitation and have the spotlight on an extra curricular activity. If I'll get the chance, I'll surely go and get my degree. :) Thanks RBBantiles! :)

I think you should definetely attend college again. Not only will it help you in your future and grant a lot more different options about a way to earn a living, but it will also make you a better person. Many people don't realise that the better education someone is, the better choices he is able to make, plus the higher education you have, the higher other people think of you.. good or bad, it really is that way, especially in people's job carreers.
• Philippines

Yeah! You're probably pointing on reputation. It's an ugly truth though that people who had a better education gets more respect.

I think you should go back to college. A lot of people say that education is a gift and that's the only thing that cannot be stolen away from you. Be optimistic about it and try to think about education as your stepping stone although right now you are already working.

Yes, you have to go back to schoo. And one thing you have to know is that knowledge is power, and since you have done 2 yrs, try and complete your education so that it will be a back up for your job and also help in your promotion. But it will better for you to combine both together and use one stone to kill two bed.

Thanks Izuarsenal! :) That's a good thing, you reminded of promotion. :D I won't get a promotion if I stay like this and this will be my life forever. No growth, no other things to do, not worth of staying for long. So, I think I better go back to school.

Yes yes go back to school. That is a big yes. Do not wait to long to go back. You are only 20. by the age of 25 you will have a degree and earn a lot more money then you are now. I am 29 and still in school because I had kids and working odd jobs. I always said to my self," I wish I would have went back to school a long time ago." I would be making more money then what i am now and I would be happy with my job. so please go back!
