Does Family Guy go too far?

I love the show Family Guy. Some of my friends think the show goes too far when it comes to their jokes. For example, the song about having AIDS or the episode about a girl with down syndrome. I find the show extremely funny but I understand why some people would say the show is inappropriate and tries to make jokes about of very serious issues. What do you think?

Like many previous posters, I think that the show does go too far sometimes, but that that is the whole point of it. What makes Family Guy so funny is the fact that you sit there wondering, "Are they really going to say what I think they're going to say?", and then they do. As for "making jokes about serious issues", sometimes people need to make jokes about things that everyone takes too seriously. Take the reference to "N-Word Jim", for example. Society is so wrapped up in "political correctness" that people are afraid to say anything for fear of being sued. The sequence with "N-Word Jim" pointed out how silly it is for one group to refer to themselves in a certain way and then become angry when another group calls them by that name. This is just one of the ways in which Family Guy exposes the absurdity of today's "hot" topics. In any case, if people disapprove of what Family Guy does, it is their choice to watch it or not. Why watch something that you don't like just so you can complain about it?

Of course they push the boundaries! That's the whole point. It's an adult show, so I believe it's a reasonable assumption that an adult can correctly gauge his/her own comfort level and can easily change the channel or switch off the tv if anything is too offensive. I enjoy those kind of shows because they're equal opportunity "haters". They poke fun at every ethnicity, country, religion, class, gender, etc. The characters are generally so heavily stereotyped that it's difficult to take anything as an earnest insult. It's not anything I would allow my child to watch, but he's still a kid and it isn't meant for children. I think people often take offense at anything and everything they can. Too sensitive, but to each her own.

It is going too far. You can look at the current season ( source: http://download-family-guy-episodes.edogo.com/ )for example. It is best among all the seasons and i am sure they gonna bring lot more interesting and unexpected episodes in future as well.

Yes with the AIDS episode and the girl with down syndrome I think they went to far. But with them making fun of other cultures and races I don't think it's too bad, because we all think it in our head most of the time, they just put it on t.v. It's not that bad as some people make it seem. It's a cartoon for adults.

Family guy is a program that has to push boundries as much as it can, at times they fall short, but in the main they hit their targets well. Its just a pity as a foreign sort i don't get half of the names mentioned in the programme. It may upset people, but good humour always will as it seeks to keep itself fresh and something people will talk about.

Yes, I have discussed this at a few other forums but yes. I didn't really like how they made fun of people with AIDS and Jews. People can think beyond that, and they don't treat others like that. Although it is really funny, I think Seth should draw the line somewhere.

yeah, this is why Family Guy is so awesome. I love this show. At first i was shocked they would make fun of stuff like this, but I came to see the humorous side of things and got a laugh out of it. I know they aren't really serious about this stuff, which is why i keep watching. If it wasn't, then this show would be in pretty big trouble.

I love Family Guy. I think sometimes the creators going too far with the ideas but in other way if they wouldn't do you think this cartoon would be still so popular?

Yes most of the times I feel like their jokes are tasteless. Quality humor should not have a hint of offensive nature in them. Family Guy has a lot of them they just like to poke fun of sensitive/taboo topics. They go a bit too far. Good for you though that you find the show extremely funny I don't find it funny at all I've never really got a good laugh out of any episodes. It's just amusing - the insulting jokes they put in. But that's it. I like Stewie and Brian they're decent characters out of the irritating personalities they've created for the show. Best example: Peter Griffin.

I do think that sometimes Family Guy can take their jokes a little to far. And sometimes I do think that some of the jokes could be very racist or just insulting. I think that just about in any episode there is something in the show that is insulting to people. But also along with that I think people need to laugh at themselves once in a while and I think that is what Family Guy is all about. And different countries have different stereotypes, for instance The United States stereotype is that We are all fat, stupid and lazy. And everyone knows that that is far from the truth. But the thing about making jokes about some serious things like Aids and down syndrome is bad and they should think twice about some of the jokes that they put in the show that are uncalled for and the entire world would have been better without them being made or said.
