Hello everybody, I know many of you are Americans and you celebrate the 4th of July this weekend. For those who have dogs at home, it might not be a happy time of the year. How do they cope with all the fireworks that are going on these days? Are your dogs afraid of loud noises? If so, how do you react when they show fear?

I tried playing classical music last year and it seemed to help, but not completely. I should have tried it again this year as the neighbors went crazy last night. I think my one dog, Ciara, would be okay if it wasn't for her sister, Penny, who barks at any slight sound she doesn't know, let alone loud bangs!!!

I wanted to ask you how they were doing during this fireworks time of the year. I don't know why I remember they were afraid of loud noises. How did they cope with the loud bangs? Did they hide or anything?

So your dog just bark at the loud noises or they look scared and try to hide? I knew that scared dogs have the tendency to run or to hide when they hear the loud noises.

Hi inu and Octav, they did the same thing last year, barked up a storm, even when my son threw down those snappers. (Snappers are these little gravel filled things that when thrown on cement, makes a little "pop") My neighbor's dog, now she hid in the bathroom, but mine I guess are more aggressive and want to attack the noise..

The Humane Society shelter is going to stay open this week-end even though it is not a regular work day for them. They are going to be taking in all of the poor little ones who've run away because of the noises. My animals pretty much take their cues from me when it comes to dealing with loud noises. They look to see how I'm handling it to know whether to panic or not. I didn't realize this until there was really loud thunder booms during our last storm. I noticed the cat checking me out to see what I was doing and then she just lay her head back down and went back to sleep.

This means your animals are not afraid of loud noises. They were lucky they haven't inherited this fear from their parents. Have you known that the fear of loud noises can be inherited?

Fear is not inherited. Any fear must be acquired or learned from enviromental circumstances.

This is a rough time of yr. for people with pets, especially dogs. We live in an Indian Reservation area, so even the loud fireworks are allowed around here, so you hear all kinds of stuff going off all hrs. of the day and night. Our dog is not a Happy camper with the noise. He likes to hide underneath the bed or curl up on someone's lap when it is going on. I am sure it is much louder for them than us.

Mine will go outside, Octav, and when they hear fireworks, they start barking at it..So I don't know if it is fear or anger at the loud noise..

I think it is rather anger than fear. Probably they don't like when that noise disturbs the silent in their place.

Happy 4th of July to all American mylotters! I remember my dogs, I have 5 dogs, during New Year's eve, all of them are turning their behinds as to where they would hide. You can find them under the bed or inside the bathroom. They are afraid of noise and the little ones seems crying. I just have to be with them so they won't feel alone during this noisy celebration.

It is so sad when you see little dogs crying out of fear! I wish they didn't need to go through all this. It is good to be with them when they are afraid but you should not pet them when they show fear, because you will only worsen the situation.

Hello Octav, I am not American and we don't celebrate the 4th of July but we do have our fireworks time of the year: the winter holydays. I had a dog that was terrified by loud noises and when the fireworks were allowed, we had the worse time of the year. She used to hide in the bathroom because it was the most quiet place of the house. I let her hide there and I didn't force her to quit her hidding place because if that was the place where she felt secure, I didn't want to change it. The dog I have now, Binne, doesn't show any sign of fear when loud noises appear so now I can enjoy the fireworks spectacle and I don't have to close all the windows when a thunderstorm comes.

Actually I am happy. I had used to like thunderstorms many years ago, before the years when I had the previous dog. I hated thunders and fireworks for 13 years. Now I can enjoy again the thunders and I can enjoy a nice evening when a fireworks display is going on in the town.

I think you are happy now that your current dog doesn't show any sign of fear when loud noises appear. It is so sad to see a scared dog and not be able to enjoy the winter holidays!
