How to know my ranking? how does that work?

I've seen in the responses and comments that most of the people has a text after their username saying the ranking, something like:
"ranked 396 out of 8,409 in cooking"
Where is that ranking, and how do I get to be ranked?
I mean, there must be somewhere to vote, and to get voted, also, what's that for, and what kind of criteria is used to vote, I mean, what have they done good to reach that ranking.

I think it's based on how frequently do you participate in the discussions in that category. I don't have ranks on all of my interests since there are some interests that I just recently added. It's because I haven't updated my interests for a few months and I didn't know that there were few ones added within those months.

Oh interesting! I've noticed those stars and numbers beside the username too. So that's the ranking. Now I know. Haha! Thanks for initiating this discussion and for the responses of the pioneers of mylot. :)

The stars and the numbers beside the username are NOT ranking.
