HI all you nature lovers ! If you are like me, you love your humming birds and we look forward to the hummers all winter and when they finally arrive.......as we usually KNOW about when they are coming, we are ecstatic to see them right Well, my hummers came in this years gung ho and all of a sudden there were honey or sugar bees? all my over feeders and therefore ran my humming birds off. How sad ! I 'm not talking one of two bees, but droves or scads or hoards........they literally hung from my feeders. I am able to move the feeders without being stung and that is good. I did all possible to rid myself of the bees by calling people who take care the bees, find their nests etc. I'm even guilty of swatting a few not to mention some things I'm not proud of........ The one bee keeper told me to put away my sugar water feeders for the season...the university people didn't have time for me. The one bee person told me when crops like alfalfa started blooming the bees would disappear. They did not ! and with our drought here in OKlahoma the crops are not doing well. I've done all I can including, vicks vaporub and vegetable oils on the feeders, and cutting down on the amount of sugar ....to no avail. I finally, after bees ran me off my own back porch and being stung three times ! took down my feeders and cried... But, I decided to go ahead and resume my feeding of winter birds........whaaaa laaa, the bees began disappearing as the bigger birds flew in ! The bees were /are afraid of the birds that apparently prey on them. Don't get me wrong, I do not intend or want the bees hurt as I know they are necessary for pollinaton, but yipppee , the bees started disappearing, so if you too have trouble with bees, dig out you big bird feeders, fill them with seeds and sunflower seeds and even scatter seeds on the ground and position big bird feeders around the humming bird feeders and you'll find that the bees will make a trail elsewhere............and let you and me enjoy the antics of humming birds ! The only pest problem left is ANTS..........but the hummers can put up them it seems much better than bees. ANy suggestions on ants ?? thanks and I hope you all can use this info as I also read many articles on the web and they too did not work ! hugs to all and enjoy the humming birds as long as you can ! I sure 'nuf am ! With the bigger birds as my companions :) quita

Hummingbird Feeding - Likes the nectar
I also enjoy every year the return of the hummingbirds. I have plants that attract them and of course my hummingbirds feeder. I have never had any problems with bees and now, thanks to your posting I know why, I have a very large bird feeder which draws a number of various birds and it is hanging right next to my hummingbird feeder. Thanks for the tip. Here is a photo of a hummingbird feeding at my feeder.

Hummingbird in Flight - Had enough to eat!!
I am glad you liked my photo. I stood still for ages trying to get photos as I made a montage of hummer photos for a friend. I am showing another photo of when the hummer left the feeder and is in flight.

That is a great pic! I left a comment you should turn that pic as well as others, into Birds and Blooms magazine ! they pay !! But , yes, don't take down your bird feeders down and continue feeding thru the summer. I quit cuz I thought the bigger birds scared my hummers away but that is not true ! I am so glad I gave up and put my bird feeders back up ! I hope you enjoy your hummers as much as I do ! I did lose a lot of hummers due to bees, but as of today there are now three......yesterday there was two and the day before only one......but with the staggering heat , their sugar water gets really too hot for them , so I go out and clean out the hot water ever so often. I don't put in much fresh , cool sugar water cuz I change it so often, but I'd rather have the birds and their antics than to worry about the cost of sugar :) I am glad you and I have something in common !! Enjoy your hummers:) I sure'nuf do ! hugs, quita

I still have the bees ever so often. They sneak around to the front I guess and I do feed birds in the front too but the birds like it in the back cuz no traffic. The bees have been a royal pain in the a$$ and I'm sure if it rains and things start blooming? that the bees will go away...........I hope. Still I don't have as many. They seem to have new schedule LOL, they leave and come back as I've learned.........But this eve. I will put out clean , cool feeders and the hummers come in at darkitis !! and very early in the morning... Put up a humming bird feeder at Wal Mart or wherever you go and I'll give you the right recipe !!! huuggsssssssssssssssssss

I got a hummingbird feeder this year, but I have yet to attract them, they have not gotten the word. Mine is hung in an area with the bigger feeders. I know that ants will not cross a chalk line as the chalk polishes their shell off, and other powdery things, but I do notknow how to apply that to bird feeders. I wonder if you put out water elsewhere for the bees if it would help. I have a few of lots of different things, not swarms of anything.

I have heard that ants will not cross a chalk line, but how do you keep ants off a humming bird feeder? I've done the chalk thing on a limb or a sheppard hook with no success. I just today put two of my feeders on the far east side of this house and it brought in bees LOL, and I'm sure there will be ants too. I read an article that ants do not like cucumbers..............so, gotta buy a few and spread out the peels. Funny, huh? I also use cedar chips around and in my house. They help some but not on all critters. Thanks for responding and hugs to ya, quita

Ant killer - This stuff really works!
You're very kind to not want to hurt the bees quita but I'm alergic to the bee stings so they have to be taken care of. When I see a bee, I freak out and run like a big baby! lol I might look silly but I look even more so when I'm all blown up like a balloon in pain! Hubby sprays the bees with bee killer even on our hummingbird feeders and then takes it down for me to clean. Once I clean it and refill it with fresh sugar water, it gets hung back out and with the bees gone, the hummingbirds come back and I get to enjoy the show they put on. Now about those ants, get some Eliminator from Walmart and wear some rubber gloves to protect yourself because it is a poison. Spread eliminator all around your yard, not a whole lot of it, in fact, you don't even need to see it cover the ground, and it'll kill all the ants, fleas, ticks and all kinds of other pesky bugs. Sometimes for the whole summer! I love this stuff and will never go without it.

I don't like hurting any animals, or insects or bugs unless they are a menace to me or my dogs and cats. I don't blame you for running away from a bee after I got stung three times ! It's good I'm not allergic, but I came in to the kitchen and apparently brought in a red ant.......I stepped on it and it stung me on the bottom of my foot.......ye gads, that hurt ! But, as to the ants, we have some of the same stuff, it's just too hot for us to put it out and my hubby is an invalid, so I guess now it's up to me........... But, thanks for the advice and I'm glad too you enjoy your hummers like I do;) quita
