Beach house or hotel?

We're fortunate enough to have a family friend with a beach house that we get to stay at. It's not on the beach, but it's only a few blocks away. We've stayed at this house for several years now. When you go to the beach, do you stay at a house or in a hotel? Do you stay on the oceanfront or is it a little way off?

If I remember right we never stayed right near the ocean front. Those hotels were always more expensive, understandably for their location.

Yeah, we could never afford an oceanfront anything! haha I stayed in an oceanfront hotel one time with a friend back in middle school and I couldn't even imagine how much they paid for it. I guess you can find good deals, but I don't know if I'm patient enough to do all the searching.
