Would you give up your life to save a stranger?

A situation in which only you can be the savior presents itself. The person is a stranger - they don't even remotely resemble anyone you know. The seconds are flashing by and any minute this stranger is going to die. Are you willing to risk you own life to save this stranger's life? Why or why not?

i still try to save him without risking my life. I don't feel my life is have more value than him, but i also don't think that his life has more value than mine... if to save him require my life then there's nothing i can do to save him because my life has equal value. Like it or not at that moment one life is going to end weather i intervene or not...

I believe that one life is equal to next, forgive my playing of the devil's advocate. I know my answer to what I am about to say, but I am curious as to yours: We are born with our lives equal. The baby in the crib next to us is not more valuable than we, nor are we more valuable than that baby. But is it possible for a person to lesson the value of their life through their actions? For example, a man is a serial killer and a thief. All he does is take - and that includes the sacred lives of others. Is this murderer's life still equal to other life? For example, is the life of the murderer equal to the life of a doctor that saves lives rather than destroy them like the murderer? Is the murderer's life still equal to the lives of the people he slayed?

my own safety first before others, because i feel i am a living hero, i am a bread winner, therefore, own self safety first before others.... there are still plenty of people i can save for the future as long as i am living....

That's an interesting perspective. If you have crucial responsibilities to others, is it right to risk your life for another? :)

So for you it would be a matter of time. It is the seconds that are the deciding factor for you when you are thinking about whether or not to risk your life.

Having a slow reaction time, I don't think I could save anyone's life in a matter of seconds. Still I would like to. To be honest, I couldn't think of any situation here though. As for the people depending on me - family and others - I'm quite selfish in this regard. I'll do whatever I felt at the moment without much concerns. Won't have time to ponder upon, anyway.

Good point! We can't sit down on the sidewalk and ponder while the object of our potential saving is hit by a car. :D

I would not give my life up for a stranger. I have to much to live for. I have 8 children and 4 beautiful grandchildren. I have a work from home job that I love and hopefully a long life ahead of me.

@emilyn1997 is correct... but if one of the children then i am sure she will save it for sure.... what i foresee is because children especially your bloodline has a more or less 80 years of stay here on earth.....

Sounds like things are going well for you! Would you risk your life if instead of a stranger it was one of your children?

I remembered when I was in school and my JROTC teacher asked us a question like this. He asked us if we would risk our life to save a child from getting hit from a car. I didn't respond because I really don't know what I would do. One of my fellow class mate saidhe would because that child has his whole life to live and he would always remember that someone saved him from getting hit from a car. My JROTC said he wouldn't because he does not know if the child would grow up to be a thief or someone bad in life. I still don't know what I would do. In my opinion a person really doesn't know what they would do until a time like that comes and they have that discission to make in a matter of seconds when their adrenaline is rushing.

well he is not a loser he is just telling it how it is. Most people would not do that because as you said life is PRECIOUS, they have their own life to live so most people would not do it But it is awesome that you would do it shows how selfless you are.

Well I was just saying what my JROTC teacher said. If you read what I wrote I personally never answered the question. If I were to answer yes or no it wouldn't be the truth. I would only know what I would do if that situation was to happen to me. TheBoozBrothers can say he would do it but if that situation was to happen to him, he never knows if he would freeze up or might have second guessing if to do it or not. I don't think anyone can truthfully answer this question until it happens.

That's an excellent point, AishaBR. What we say now and what we do in those last crucial seconds could be worlds apart.

Good question but I don't know the answer to that yet. I can only decide when the time comes.

it's because of the adrenaline.. the flight or fight options.... for example: even thou how good you are in performing an earthquake drill, but when the situations like a real magnitude 10 earthquake comes... you'll only forgot your earthquake drill training masterpieces.... maybe you'll stare to something by doing nothing because of the adrenaline and a situations of shocked.... since an unexpected awesome quake happened and you haven't prepared....

Probably the most straight forward and honest answer yet. :)

If I have to say right now, I would probably say that I wouldn't risk my life to save a stranger's life. Also, it would depend on how much my life it would be at risk. But, I guess that we never know what could happen in these situations when you only have a few seconds to make a decision. I think that I can say that I wouldn't give up my life for a stranger, but maybe I do.

Let's say the stranger was drowning. Assuming you know how to swim, that reduce the risk to your own life by at least half. With these conditions in place, would you save the life of the stranger? :)
