This New Diet Is Starting To Make Me Feel Ill :-(

I'm sat here typing this and my belly feels..well, poorly, to be honest. I've "been" to the toilet a few times, the last one being the best lol but I STILL feel crap. It's not food poisoning though, I'm confident about that. I think all these recent changes to my diet (especially the different things I've been doing to meat) have taken their toll. It's hard to explain it in words but I think anyone can identify with changing their ways of cooking..then you find that not all the dishes come out as you would like. Like today (well, yesterday now) I used that marinade I was mentioning the other day, this time to cover beef..and it didn't work. In fact it was bloody awful. John loved it, of course..bless 'im. A couple of dishes I liked were a really nice salmon dish I concoted, plus one of the chicken dishes (and the already prepared version from Pioneer Butchers) but, apart from that, I've not liked the red meat at all. Like Mum, I'm slowly going off it. What's the answer? Well, instead of concentrating on the meat and basic vegetables I need to mix it up a bit. With my last £5 I will buy fruit and salad ingredients..see how far the money stretches. This will include a couple of oranges, lettuce and carrots, amongst other things..the latter we've already got. The one good thing is that John will eat ANYTHING, apart from Yorkshire Pudding but I do want to fill him up. It's no good going down the salad route if none of it will satsify him (and me) but at least I like a wide variety of nuts, salted cashews being food I can use in my next recipe with the orange segments, etc. I'm also determined to introduce food like tomatoes. I mean, I like the raw versions so I've no excuse not to at least TRY to eat it cooked. I just want to feel more alive, instead of bloated and tired all the time. My energy levels need to improve and I reckon John's do too, actually, as he doesn't eat properly at work.

Well...diet to healthy is very good. But, if done to excess dietary let alone for purposes other then healthy, seems instead will turn to hurt us...

A couple of things I've tried have been very good. Unfortunately, we have no salmon left now and the supermarket we get it from isn't within walking distance. I don't want hubby to have to go up there and fork out more money when we have stuff in the freezer that I still have to thaw out and cook. I shall think of something!

This is going to be a trying time for you, Janey. I could use Winston Churchill's "blood, sweat & tears" quote on you here, but that's probably the last thing you want to hear right now! You're probably going through a cleansing process or a bit of a detox, but this should all clear up in the end. I find taking acidophilous, the eight species variety, does help in situations like this. Rice & lentil dishes & plenty of vegetables are always quite filling, even if you just boil them without adding anything extra, or maybe some sea salt like you have, is good enough. It might also take some time for your taste buds to get used to the natural taste of some foods? Even raw foods like avocado can be very filling. It's really great as a butter or margarine substitute. Then there's guacamole too! One thing to watch is mixing up different types of foods & eating them too close together. This can make you feel really horrible afterwards. Try eating, say a whole avocado an hour at least before eating a regular meal. It always works better eating any fruits like pineapple first, then waiting half an hour or more before eating the main meal. Seems to get the digestive juices going!

I think I've only ever eaten avocado in a fruit salad, which was hardly appetising (in a restaurant years ago) so can you tell me what it tastes like please?

It's really one of the more substantial of the fruits. It is quite smooth, creamy, mildly nutty & buttery (hence, a good substitute for butter) & the best ones taste nice & rich. They're best eaten on their own. I've never had avocado in a fruit salad before. Avocados are rich without being too heavy or greasy & have a fullness & meatiness about them, which allows them to perfectly complement or substitute protein. In cooked dishes, they are said to smooth key flavours without masking them & soften salt, chilli & spice without disguising them. Avocado will help key flavour notes linger longer in your mouth due to the good fats present in the high-fibre fruit. Mmmmm... avocados!

I think that your tummy has had a bit of a shock. For the first time in ages it is getting just what it needs - well balanced and healthy. Now there's a large part of it that shouts "NO JANEY", being more used to pies etc and it is protesting. The fact is that that queasiness is probably actually a good thing. However, take it easy and don't force things. Turning to other matters. Cookery is chemistry. Quite often things don't quite result how we expected. But next time they'll be perfect. It's the luck of the draw and doesn't mean very much except that next time you'll probably get it spot on again - this is paticularly the case with sauces and anything that rises!! Rather than salad why not indulge his sweet tooth. Make a BIG fruit salad (easy on the sugar) add Alpro Soya yoghurt to it. Low in fat and yummy. You are learning to love food and it's a big adventure. I have so much respect for what you are doing. Keep up the good work.

I noticed in other answers you saying you have lamb steaks. I dont eat lamb, so I couldnt help you there but Im sure you could find some good recipes on the internet. Ive had digestive problems for a long time. Ever since I became a vegetarian, it screwed up my system. Im not saying that not eating meat is bad for everyone...it was for me for some reason. Now I take some enzymes to help me digest my food, once in a while, it helps. I know when I need to take some as I get bloated. I also take some BIO-K its a probiotic and that helps also. I eat a lot of veggies still but cooked. I will have salads that includes lettuce, tomatoes, onions, radishes, red peppers, cucumbers, and whatever fruit I have around (apple, peaches, abricot, strawberries, raspberries, etc) I eat mostly chicken and pork as Ive noticed lately that beef is not the same as it used to be.....and its not only me but my sister and hubby have the same reaction to it too. So I use chicken and cook it many different ways. I make pork roast, pork chops, or ground pork to make meatballs or meat loafs. I also try to not eat potatoes too much, so I make vegetable rice or couscous. I try to make sure we have meat, veggies, fruits and some type of cereal at every meal. I eat small meals (5 or 6) throughout the day. I will cook more than we need for one meal so it can be reheated in the microwave. I dont have desserts at every meal, only now and then. I try to stay off sugar but cant go without it in my coffee so thats why I try not to eat desserts. They say that a perfect meal is 1/3 of your place has to be protein (meat, fish, eggs, legumes, cheese) 2/3 veggies. So thats what I try to do. But it cant be done when Im having spaghetti, because pasta is mostly sugar!! Go slow with the new recipes. Make a menu for the whole week so you know exactly what to buy otherwise you'll buy things that you wont know what to do with. It'll take time at first until you get used to it but you'll get there!! DO eat more veggies....they are good for you.

I think that's the longest response I've ever had from you..and thanks so much for it! I know a lot more about your eating habits, which are fascinating I must say. I totally agree with you about beef. More often than not the beef we buy isn't the same as the other meats and I reckon pork, in particular, has improved. At one time I'd prefer the beef over the pork but now the idea of eating beef actually makes me feel sick as it's crap lol. I would say chicken is probably the most versatile of the meats but that varies too, in quality. John saw some organic chicken fillets for over £7 which is more than a full one. Extortionate, eh? We had no choice but to get the cheaper ones and they're not the same. This is why I had to do fancy things with them to make them taste of anything. The problem I have is that I cannot dictate to John what we can eat all the time, for the simple reason he does not have the cash. If I worked then I could go out shopping whenever I felt like it..and would most probably stock up on salad ingredients, that type of thing. Because he pays for the food I tend to hold back a little bit as I'm conscious of how much he's spending. At least the herbs and spices will keep me going for a while!

If you are using synthetic sweeteners like aspartame or sweet n low, a large amount of these can cause diarrhea. At first when the fat free chips came on the market, they had a warning on the bottom of them. I do not think that they put it on there any more. I had a problem with this when I ate sweet n low candies and researched them to find this out.

No, I'm not using synthetic sweeteners but it's most probably in processed foods, that we've cut down on recently. Perhaps I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms, which is a possibility!

It is good for you to begin new diet.Over here,It is well known that "illness finds its way in by the mouth."Having a balanced diet is helpful to your health.Another word spreads from mouth to mouth here,i.e. The four-legged (mean beef, mutton ,etc. )is inferior to the two legged (chicken, duck, goose)and the two legged is inferior to one legged(mushroom). However,in my opinion,It is open to question. And again,if you want to feel more alive ,you must get plenty of exercise.

If you love meat, you can use it with less marinades. A good meat only needs salt, maybe pepper a little oil and to the oven over a bed of onions. I love raw salads but they get better with a mixture of greens, raw tomato diced, diced fresh cheese, olives if you like, homemade croutons, oregano and parmesan cheese as toppings. I only use salt, olive oil and vinegar as dressing so it´s light. A roasted meat with a good salad should improve your energy levels. And I use fruits for desserts. I don´t recommend canned veggies: they are yucky to say the least.

I know what you mean about canned veg. You're right..not very nice. I guess I'm over-complicating things aren't I? As you say, keep it simple and stick to it, rather than feeling the need to change things all the time. I have these lamb steaks that I'm terrified of ruining if I start to "mess" with them. Far easier to just season it I think!!

Actually it's not so much the new diet as the CHANGE in diet. Drastic changes will cause some upsets. It's a much better idea to introduce change slowly - over a week or so - instead of all at once.
