How is life in Australia?

When I was a child, my parents wanted to emigrate to Australia, but finally they didn't. Now it's my husband who is dreaming with emigrating to Australia. So I am wondering if there's any mylotter from Australia who could give me some information about Australia. How is life over there? What kind of possibilities are there to find a job? Which professionals are they looking for? What about schools for children and health system? Thanks in advance for any information you....

Life is pretty good here in general. It is a lot more expensive to live than it used to be. The cost of living versus the income we receive has risen a lot in my lifetime, but it is still pretty cheap compared to a lot of European countries. As it is such a large country with a diverse array of landscapes, climates, cultures and so forth, it is hard to answer your question accurately as it differs from area to area. Different States have different systems and some are better than others in terms of health care and education as well as work prospects. Compared to the USA and the UK (not sure about other Europe nations), our economy is going strong. There are plenty of jobs for those with skills and who want to work. Education in the public system is pretty good for a free system and health care is very cheap as well. Sometimes even free. What area are you thinking of moving to?

I grew up in Melbourne an hour to the south of the city on the Mornington Peninsula. It is a nice area down there, surrounded by great beaches. It does get cold in Melbourne in winter, but it never snows or anything unless you live in the surrounding hills. But summer time there is great with dry warm summers and loads of beaches to have fun at. Melbourne is a big city, very spread out, much like Sydney and the people are nicer in Melbourne than Sydney!

Thanks for your posts. I am still not sure about the area, I thought maybe Melbourne!? But my knowledge about this country is still very rare.

Yes, we have it good here. It's very expensive to even just survive up in South East QLD, where Bill is. Still very affordable down here in Adelaide - & for once, the weather is just as cold in Queensland as it is here! Which reminds me; I've got to put another order in with Bill's online business in his profile to help out his bottom line!

It's pretty tricky finding discussions about Australia on My Lot that aren't about cricket (80%) or politics or natural disasters, but here are some good, informative ones that I've dug up for you: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2466203.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2461285.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2329469.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2358337.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2236778.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2197607.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2119464.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/image/2174297.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1924403.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1762131.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1453008.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/819155.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2395579.aspx There are more too, especially from Hiccup & RawBill1 who are still very active here. These cover most of the good, bad & ugly, so you can draw your own conclusions. When you tell people you're from Down Under, most people have a fair idea about the place by now. I can't speak for the whole country, but generally, Australians have a long term shortage of educated skilled workers, especially those willing to work in regional centres or the outback. Schools, child care centres & health care systems are said to be of a high standard.

Thanks again for spreading the word about me here by mentioning me and adding my discussions. I have a lot more Aussie ones to start if I am going to catch up with Hiccup though!
