They Grow Up So Fast!

My niece is getting married next month and I have been specifically requested to be present. One sister is going to pick me up and give me a ride (it is two states over) and I will be gone for most of the week, if not a full week. My daughter is 17 now and working two jobs in preparation for college. She got her GED in March and is quite the young woman so I have decided that she will be fine alone in the house while I am gone. Still, I don't want her to be totally without any adult contact in that time so I have asked several friends and neighbors to check in on her from time to time while I am gone...make sure she's taking care of the cats and isn't too freaked out alone in the house. I remember when I was 17 my parents took a month long trip to Hawaii on a third honeymoon and my kid sister went to live with my older sister in Seattle. I was left alone in our huge five bedroom home for the entire month. No, I did not throw wild parties. I attended school and went home and did my quiet activities until bedtime but there was one dinner party I did throw, inviting about thirty people for dinner, including church leaders and family friends. It was a lot of fun and yes, I did clean the house! It is a little freaky to realize that my own daughter is now at that same age and such a responsible child that I feel comfortable trusting her with the house. Yes, I suppose I am a proud mama!

I was about that age when my parents left and had me stay with some friends. My sister stayed with a friend, but she is 4 years younger. I would've happily stayed in the house alone, I don't think it would've bothered me, but they didn't give me that choice... I wouldn't have even had a dinner party because I wasn't that kind'a gal...

The wildest party we ever had was the floor warming - and that was sans booze!

I had a wonderful time although my daughter has since proven to be a disappointment and not as mature as I had thought. But that's a different matter altogether. We are now working on repairing the damage that she has done to herself. I just hope she has learned her lesson.
