Debit card uses your checking account balance for purchases, while credit card uses bank extend credit line or high interest loan for your purchases. If your checking account is out of money, then your D/C will not go through, but your C/C will but with interest payment at the end of the month. They are quite similar in term of user features, usually D/C can be used for cash withdrawal and purchases while C/C is good for purchases only.
