Facebook Jr

I think Facebook should make a Facebook Jr for the younger ones, tweens and young teens. My niece is 11 and she wants a facebook so bad. But mom is not quite ready to let her have one. Last I checked you had to be 13 years old. Several of her friends have a facebook so they had to have lied. I agree that facebook is now a part of anyone and everyone's social life and they are growing up with it. (unlike me) Part of me thinks she should be able to hang out with her friends there. But a bigger part of me says its wrong to lie just to get your own way. I have suggested other similar sites and she likes some of them...but its not the same. Facebook Jr would be a wonderful solution. Any opinions?

It is really a good suggestion. In my personal views, those who are too young should concentrate in their studies but not the social network. Even though if there is a special site for those junior, I don't think it is good too. I am worrying someone might take this opportunity to join in and to influence our junior easily. As such, it is better for our junior to have other healthy activities.

Oh it would be great if the kids would concentrate in their studies, and instead of go online do other healthy activities. That's right up there with eating 3 square meals a day with several servings of vegetables, getting a good nights sleep nightly and doing all their chores on time without being asked. Have you been around any tween/teens lately?

Well I do concur with your idea of a sister program of facebook for the youngest of the teens but with your best intentions the internet is not a person to person thing and at first it would be a great thing then there would be kids on there that wouldn't really uh well be kids . . . . maybe im just being a pessimist about this but there are a lot of creepy people out there just sayin.

I see what you're saying! Its just that the internet is so huge and facebook has such a powerful pull. fb jr jr could be kinda like a kiddie pool so to speak. They could still get hurt in the water but its not quite as bad as going to the deep end. lol

As a mom of a 9 y/o whose friend also have lied to get a FB, I agree with your niece's mom, because even though I am cautious about who my friends are, the stuff I see there, I don't think my son needs to see. Now for your idea, there are two problems, both of which is the reason I won't allow my son to have a FB. 1) The drama, I can't believe how much drama goes on there, and these are suppose to be mature adults.. 2) Even if they had a site for pre-teens only, how can one prove, without a doubt, they are not an adult trying to gain the trust of a young child? Those are big concerns and why I don't allow my son to have a FB or any other site where there are online friends and chatting..

I'm with you for the most part especially the drama. My daughter came home from school last year every day talking abut what the girls said, did or didn't do and all the commotion in the class rooms. Not about what they were learning or what the teacher did or a book they read. But I realize I have to guide her with this because its gonna always be around. Almost the same can be said about internet safety. It's never gonna be safe enough for the kids. I just do my best to talk to my kid about all of it, keep her grounded and guide her the best I can. And my niece when I can.

In my opinion, facebook is a place to meet many people, regardless of race, religion, and age so the suggestion to divide facebook and facebook junior is difficult to be applied

That's just it though, its not for all ages. Kids aren't supposed to join until they are 13 years old and so many kids are doing it any way. Its just so big...kids want a facebook page too.

I totally agree with you on this. This would be a great way for young persons to interact while keeping them away from the more mature content in regular Facebook. Its a great idea, I think kids would love it.

Even if you gave them their own space, the tweens and young teens think that they are as grown up as the older kids. I think it is almost criminal the way parents teach children to lie. Then they wonder why their 11 year olds are chatting online with adult men and they give out personal information. The internet is not a toy or a play ground. I think just as youngsters lie to get on FB, pedophiles would lie to get on FB Jr.

Its funny you say that, I asked my daughter what she thought about it and her answer was it wouldn't be the same. And yea, the parents who allow this are just teaching the kids that even if there are rules with something just tell a lie and everything is fine. As opposed to no we can't do this because its against the rules!

I agree with you. I think parents should only allow their children to use Facebook Junior. Though I think it would be difficult to implement however I think it is very helpful indeed.

well, nice idea. but i think that too dificult to realyze. you can found other social network site for children, maybe. and you know, almost of internet user must 18 year old, that was minimum.

I think this is a great idea. I have 3 nephews of varying ages and 2 of them I chat with over their parents facebook page. I don't know if facebook jr would fix this problem, there would have to be some kind of security protocol for adults to chat with family or something. But I think it is a terrific idea.
