Yes, the accident was traumatizing and I hope it never happens again. I don't mean to be rude but I don't think being a survivor means being a national hero. They were doing there job, knowing the hazards of the job. Because, my definition of a hero is someone who has done something great or of significance for their people. So do you think they are a hero?

I am chilean and I think that the miners and their families did heroic things by just supporting each other and keeping faith for days when they could not know if they were ever going to be rescued. As for being "national" heroes, I don´t think they are. Our heroes now are lots of students who are risking their lives fighting for the right to study. They want free education for the children without means, among other things. If the President doesn´t make changes, He´ll finish his period in shame. These new heroes have had coverage worldwide. Check. I´m my country we are fighters, in spite of the uglyness of power and money.

I do not think that it was because they survived that they were heroes. I think it is because they thought of each other, sported each other and did not panic or decide to fight over what little food and water that was left. And they certainly did not have any knife fights or tool fights so that the fittest would survive.
