Flies and Puppies

I have 5 puppies that are about 3 weeks old and the flies are really bothering them. They are constantly at their ears and one of them have been bit and has a sore on its' ear. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can keep the flies off of them without using any kind of chemicals on them? The vet can recommend some spray, but I would like to avoid that if possible. I would like to use something more natural on them.

I have heard and read somewhere that Olive oil is good for a dogs sheen, so I would think this might be something worth trying to even ward off bugs, and nats, fleas, etc. Are you sure that this was not fleas or something as well? This does not sound Good or fun, and hope by now everything is better.

Aww...congrats on your puppies. Maybe you could hang some fly strips. Like in their house. Maybe the fly strips will attract the flies from them.

Well, spraying original Listerine is supposed to repel flies. I would put some Vaseline on the edges of their little ears because they are so tender. I have also heard that hanging basil around will repel the flies. Like tied bunches of the herb. Also, those old fashioned sticky fly papers will definitely trap and kill the flies. Sometimes lemon scented plants will repel all kinds of insects and somewhere I heard that diluting lemon juice with water and putting it on their coats helps. Good luck.
