I truly enjoyed watching the episode of "Unsung" featuring the Sylvers. I grew up hearing their music on the radio, and I was glad to hear from their own words what their family went through before, during, and after the fame! Some crucial lessons learned: 1. Don't let any producer or industry head cause you to throw your family under the bus. If you must part ways professionally, discuss it with your loved one, and let it be for the right reasons. Thankfully, the Sylvers were able to recover, forgive each other, and move forward. 2. As wonderful as performing is, always have a back-up plan for when the hits (and money) aren't coming in anymore. Unfortunately, according to the Sylvers themselves, they had not discussed how to deal with the changes in their careers, and they just went along with everyone else's ideas for their direction. As a result, their careers and personal lives suffered. 3. All hope is not lost; in spite of tragedies and problems, the Sylvers are leading fruitful and productive lives today. Olympia-Ann (the oldest) is finally living a healthy and productive life after battling schizophrenia for years, Leon is continuing on as a producer/songwriter, James works in management of a security company, Angie works as a paralegal, Charmaine works for a charter schools project, and Pat is a minister. I appreciate the Sylvers being willing to share their story on Unsung. It was truly eye-opening and rewarding!
